Highlights from the 3rd edition of European Biotech Week

Year upon year, the participation to European Biotech Week has increased with a record 15 countries taking part in the 2015 edition. The 100+ initiatives organised this year involved thousands of Europeans in a much needed effort to unravel the complexities of biotechnology and how it is harnessed for the benefit of society. Making bioeconomy work for sustainable development

To date, more than forty countries are actively promoting bioeconomy with a view to meeting the grand societal challenges of sustainable development. Last week, about 700 bioeconomy leaders from Europe, Asia, Africa and America gathered in Berlin at the Global Bioeconomy Summit to discuss policies for a sustainable bioeconomy at global and national levels. Biotech and the future of innovation in Europe

Next week, the 7th European Innovation Summit will provide a unique platform to discuss how Europe can progress on the innovation front. The Summit features Nathalie Moll’s intervention in the plenary session on policies and instruments for innovation, as well as a lunch debate organised by EuropaBio on the importance of IP and a session co-organised with the Agri-Food Chain Coalition and the BBI JU focusing on the need for science-based policymaking. The European Innovation Summit will be an opportunity for EuropaBio to share our views on the elements that are necessary to ensure that the biotech industry contributes to Europe's goals of growth, investment and innovation. Healthcare biotech

The European Conference on Rare Diseases (ECRD) will take place in Edinburgh on 26-28 May 2016. The conference is organised by EURORDIS and DIA Europe in partnership with several stakeholders, including EuropaBio. The call for poster abstracts will close on 31 January 2016. Registration also opens this week. Read more

Agricultural biotech

"The Government wants access to new technologies, including GM. Without that how are you going to remain competitive and support the economic growth the Government is so keen to promote?" asked Renaud Wilson, from the UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, at a National Farmers' Union conference on the future of GM technology in Britain. Read more on FG Insight

Industrial biotech

"We believe actions such as a European preferred public procurement programme or temporary tax incentives for bio-based products could help to bridge the gap between innovation and market uptake,” Boris Dumange, DG of IAR Pole, talks to Il Bioeconomista about the bioeconomy, including IAR’s expectations for the French Bioeconomy Strategy and the goals of the 3Bi intercluster.
