International Boreal Forest Research Association, #01

President's welcome

Dear fellow boreal researchers,

I am pleased to announce a number of new services by the International Boreal Forest Research Association (IBFRA). First though, you are receiving this email because you had participated in an IBFRA event at some point over the past few years. While you can unsubscribe at any time, I hope you will stay with us. Our plan is to release an IBFRA newsletter every 6-8 weeks. In each issue, we will bring you an update on current IBFRA activities and upcoming events as well as highlights of current boreal forest research. We hope you will find it of interest and feel free to suggest content!

In this issue I am pleased be able to announce the 18th IBFRA international conference, Our Boreal Our Future: The science, policy and practice of addressing change to be held in Bangor, Maine, USA, June 5-9, 2017 as well as our new website and our 60-second science video series.

As a brief introduction, IBFRA was formed in 1991 with the mission to promote and coordinate research related to boreal forests. The objectives of IBFRA are to:

  • Contribute to the sustainable development of boreal forests by promoting and coordinating fundamental and applied research and relevant activities relating to forest ecosystems, forest management, forest products and all forms of forest use within the boreal zone;
  • Promote and coordinate research to increase understanding of the role of boreal forest ecosystems in the global environment and the effects of environmental change on that role;
  • Promote the dissemination of research results and transfer of new technology and the adoption of new methods of forest utilization, planning and social organization, with a view to ensuring sustainable development and preservation of boreal forest ecosystems.
To accomplish this, IBFRA:
  • Connects researchers, graduate students and others interested in boreal forest research;
  • Encourages innovation and knowledge-sharing on key boreal forest issues;
  • Promotes a multidisciplinary approach for boreal forest research activities;
  • Assists in generating partnerships and connections with boreal forest research institutions across the circumboreal region to provide members with networking opportunities.
Sincerely,

Rasmus Astrup
IBFRA President

We are also accepting special session proposals which should include a title, abstract, organizer, and names and suggested titles of constituent talks (if applicable) of proposed special sessions. In addition, the type of proposed special session should be indicated. The following formats will be considered: panels, research sessions, open discussions for science missions, and short workshops. The special session proposals can be sent to the Head of the Scientific Committee, Christopher Woodall (cwoodall@fs.fed.us) prior to January 1, 2017.

We have redesigned our website. Please visit and let us know what you think. If you have a boreal story you would like to share, let us know. We are interested in hearing about your research or receiving a review of a research article or book. Send your ideas to info@ibfra.org

60-Second Science

Announcing IBFRA's 60 Second Science video series. Visit our YouTube channel to view leading boreal researchers taking one minute to highlight their important work.

First up, watch Dr. Michael Wulder of the Canadian Forest Service talk about his work on using satellite and laser data to produce detailed forest maps that are being used to address many questions related to forest change, including both depletions (largely via fire and harvest) as well as recovery post disturbance (characterized using lidar). Mike and his team have been using tens of thousands of Landsat images to characterize, on an annual basis, conditions and changes over Canada’s forests in a systematic and transparent fashion for the period from 1984 to present day. Their goal is to produce data products that support science, monitoring and reporting activities to facilitate the flow of information from scientists to policy makers and the wider public.
