Electricity Rate Changes and Support Program

As of November 1, 2015, HydroOttawa raised their electricity prices for both homes and businesses. The new rates are as follows:

Off-peak (7 pm - 7 am weekdays, all day on weekdays and holidays): 8.3 ¢ / kWh
Mid-peak (11 am - 5 pm weekdays): 12.8 ¢ / kWh
On-peak (7 am - 11 am and 5 pm - 7 pm weekdays): 17.5 ¢ / kWh

Need help paying your bill?

The Ontario Electricity Support Program can help reduce the cost of your electricity bills by applying a monthly credit directly to the bill. The credit amount will depend on how many people live in your home and their combined household income.

Credits range from $30 to $50 per month, with higher credits of $45 to $75 for those whose homes are electrically heated or who use an approved medical device requiring a lot of electricity.

Apply for the program online at ontarioelectricitysupport.ca, or in person at a designated resource centre. Two Ottawa centres you can visit for help are the Lowertown Community Resource Centre (41 Cobourg Street) or the South East Ottawa Community Resource Centre (600-1355 Bank Street, across from Billings Bridge mall).

For more information about the program, you can call 1-855-831-8151 or visit ontarioelectricitysupport.ca.You can also contact CCOC's Sustainability Facilitator, Natalia, at 613-234-4065 ext. 243 or natalia.snajdr@ccochousing.org for tips on how to save energy in your home.

CCOC ♥'s ONPHA

The Ontario Non Profit Housing Association is the voice of non-profit housing in Ontario. Since 1988 ONPHA has been an independent, member-funded and member directed association, providing the non-profit housing sector with education, policy and research, management advice, networking, advocacy and bulk procurement opportunities. ONPHA works closely with all levels of government to promote sustainable, community-based affordable housing across Ontario. ONPHA members provide homes to over 400,000 people.

CCOC has been a strong ONPHA supporter since the very beginning. We recognize the value of having a strong sector association with the staff resources, expertise and mandate to advocate for affordable housing and to promote best practices in housing management and working with tenants. We know that we can call for support if we have question, and we’re often involved in lending our voice on housing policy issues through committees and working groups.

We find great value in training for our staff and volunteers through webinars and courses offered online and in person. Each year we send a group of board and committee members to ONPHA’s 3-day conference – it’s our main governance training platform and a great way for new volunteers to learn from presenters and meet almost 1,000 “housers” from across the province.

Over the years, several CCOC staff and volunteers have been elected to serve on ONPHA’s Board of Directors, including Derek Ballantyne, Debbie Barton, Ray Sullivan, Rod Manchee, Catherine Boucher, Nick Falvo and Meg McCallum. We’re pleased and proud to announce that Meg McCallum, CCOC's Manager of Membership and Communications, was elected President of ONPHA this fall.

CCOC is happy to support such an important organization in our sector. We look forward to continuing our loud and proud leadership for affordable housing!

Please keep the windows closed in winter

If your apartment gets too hot during the winter months, try setting your thermostat to a lower temperature.

Every winter CCOC gets calls for burst pipes. People open windows in their apartment or in the laundry room for fresh air or to cool things down. If pipes run near the open windows or if the window is left open too long, the pipes will freeze and burst. This floods the apartment or laundry room and usually any apartments below. When this happens, the tenant is responsible for damages and will be billed for repairs.

If you don’t have a thermostat to control your heat, or it doesn’t seem to work, call the maintenance department at 613-234-4065, ext. 707 for help.
