Affordable Housing in Northeast OKC

Helping people is something Dr. Ruth Colbert Barnes has a passion for, along with advancing Northeast Oklahoma City. Through her Dr. Ruth Joyce Colbert Barnes Foundation, she is combining these passions by helping people with affordable housing in the area.

The mission of her foundation focuses on revitalizing neighborhoods, rebuilding communities, re-establishing healthy lifestyles and reinforcing educational values.

Through collaborating with the Oklahoma Sovereign Arts Foundation, there are plans to build several homes in Northeast Oklahoma City. Colbert Barnes is also working with the Oklahoma City Urban Renewal Authority on purchasing lots for the project. The Urban Renewal Authority works with developers to sell them land at low prices. She said working with these organizations has been a pleasant experience, allowing the projects to go smoothly.

The idea started in 2011, and in March 2013, Dr. Colbert Barnes wrote a proposal for $1.4 million to build 12 homes. Currently, the project is set to build seven single-family homes with more to come.

“The purpose of the project is to raise the bar and set a new standard for beautiful homes in the neighborhood,” said Dr. Colbert Barnes. “We want to attract people back to our community through this trendsetting idea and by building neighborhood character.”

Plans will keep with the current architecture style in the area while incorporating a fresh and updated feel. Superior, green products that are energy efficient will be utilized for insulation, appliances and more.

The foundation is also partnering with the Oklahoma Housing Finance Agency and Community Action to provide down payment assistance to those interested in buying the homes. They will also work with community churches to find pre-approved tenants as part of a unique marketing plan.

Tenants will even have a say in the colors and certain interior aspects of their future home. The foundation will also provide training assistance for homeownership, partnering with banks and realtors.

Through this truly collaborative effort, Northeast Oklahoma City will benefit from these new homes for years to come. For more information on this project or the foundation, visit rjcbfoundation.org.
