Students are grateful for the Kindle Classroom Project

Dear <<First Name>>,

It's already Thanksgiving! How did that happen?

This past month has been busy for the Kindle Classroom Project! New students are joining the program (600+ in all), the Kindle Library is growing (nearing 600 titles), and gratitude is spreading all around.

I want to thank you again, loyal KCP community, for supporting the project and for caring deeply about the reading lives of young people.

This Month's Highlights

- Students are grateful that they get to read whatever they want, whenever they want. Liniquer in Hayward said, "Thank you for the opportunity to read to my heart's content."

Here's Tae'Janai in San Francisco, whose reading has skyrocketed (a book every two days) since receiving her Kindle.

Tae'Janai said, "It was hard before because I wasn't able to get to the library as often as I wanted."

- Students are requesting new books left and right. If the book a student wants to read is not yet part of the Kindle Library, students may request it, and I buy it, thanks to generous donors. (After all, books are best in young people's hands.)

Felipe in San Francisco requested Reymundo Sanchez's Once a King, Always a King after reading My Bloody Life: The Making of a Latin King. In his request, he wrote, "My Bloody Life made me realize that the way to really succeed is to finish school. It changed my views on gang life."

And here's Oakland student Noel's request for Eleanor & Park. Before getting the book on his Kindle, Noel was reading a physical copy at school that couldn't be checked out.

- Teachers are also appreciative. For teachers who believe in independent reading, having access to Kindles means they can spend more time interacting with their students and developing their reading interests — rather than always foraging for books.

Jessica in Oakland, whose students received their Kindles last month, said she sees a big change. "This is all very dreamy. I feel like I'm living in a movie about excited readers."

- Donations keep rolling in. There are so many people donating their used Kindles, cash for books, and key accessories. Here's a box of 51 Kindle Fire cases that Molly (Fishers, IN) donated.

Other supporters this month include Brian (Leesburg, VA), Barbara (Oakland, CA), LK (Alexandria, VA), Mary (Parkersburg, IA), Kati (Newark, CA), Larisa (Oakland, CA), Lori (Oceanside, CA), Faye (Cleveland, TN), Robert (Clemmons, NC), Dave (Oakland, CA), Miguel (San Juan, PR), Kai (Sugar Grove, IL), Sandy (Morris, IL), Stephanie (New York, NY), John (Rancho Mirage, CA), Jan (Westport, CT), Ralph (San Francisco, CA), Allison (Portland, ME), Taylor (Erie, PA), Beatrice (Naples, FL), and many others. Some supporters are first-time, others are sustaining — and all are appreciated!

Want to Get (even more) Involved?

I would like to ask for your support to ensure that the KCP can continue to honor students' book requests through the end of next summer.

At the current pace — 2-3 new book requests come in each day — the program has enough money to last through next March. To make it through next August will require an additional $4,000.

Please consider supporting a student's reading life this year. Every $10 that you donate goes to purchase a new book for a student (and his or her 600 peers) to read. You can make a donation via PayPal or via the KCP's Contribute page.

Thank you again for all your support. Have a wonderful month. If you like, please reply to this email and let me know your thoughts!

Happy reading,
Mark Isero
