Recent International Visitors

Open World delegates from Ukraine visited Rochester between October 23-October 31st. 2015. The delegation focused on the topic of Accountable Governance and Refugee and IDPs.
The Open World delegates hold the Ukrainian Flag after the Farewell Dinner. RGC members, friends, and host families pose with the delegates.
Rochester Global Connections hosted five Ukrainian leaders participating in the congressionally sponsored Open World Leadership program from October 23-October 31, 2015.

While in Rochester, the delegates visited with federal, state, county, and local legislatures to understand how various levels of government shape and oversee programs related to refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). They also met with professionals from the Center for Refugee Health, Nazareth College - Center for International Education, Rochester International Academy, Foodlink, Legal Aid Society, Catholic Family Center, InterVol and Rochester Refugee Resettlement Services. The delegates and local professionals shared their experiences and expertise through presentations, round table discussions, and hands-on activities. By networking with American professionals, community leaders and hosts, the group has an opportunity to collaborate on refugee initiatives and potential cultural exchanges in the future. The overall purpose of the visit was for the delegates to gain a greater understanding of American civil society, US policy, social government programs and local non-profit initiatives serving refugees, immigrants and the underprivileged.

The delegates also took part in several cultural and community activities -- a dinner meeting with Irondequoit Rotary, visits to Buffalo and Niagara Falls, and tours of The George Eastman House, The Strong National Museum of Play and the Susan B. Anthony House. The visiting delegates: Svitlana Olyeynikova, Social Worker, KrymSOS; Kateryna Boniakivska, Community activist working with refugee children in Poltava; Yuliia Pimenova, Press-Secretary and Content Manager in the framework of a USAID grant, “Station Kharkiv”; Daria Voropaieva, Reporter/Editor/Translator and Oleksandra Syrotenko, Assistant-Consultant to a People’s Deputy of Ukraine in the Poltava region, were very grateful and much impressed with the warmth and openness of the Greater Rochester community. Olena Tretyak, attorney at the Regional Center for Human Rights in Kyiv, Ukraine accompanied the group as a facilitator.
