Hi everyone

We have received this news from the EPA Victoria

1) Rendering company found guilty for rotting carcass smell

Media Release, 25/11/2015
A Brooklyn meat rendering company that caused a ‘rotting carcass’ smell to impact on nearby residents to the point where they were too embarrassed to invite visitors to their homes was found guilty in court yesterday.

Australian Tallow Producers Pty Ltd (ATP) was found guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court following an Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) investigation that led to the company being charged with three counts of air pollution offences.

The company was found to be in contravention of the Environment Protection Act 1970 after it polluted the atmosphere by allowing odours offensive to humans on three separate occasions in June 2011 and September 2011.

2) EPA Annual Report 2014 - 2015
Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria’s 2014-15 Annual Report looks back on the penultimate year of the reform program outlined in its 5 Year Plan. In 2014-15 EPA continued its commitment to protecting the environment and reinvigorated its focus on the community we serve. Highlights for the year include: Improving conditions in the Brooklyn Industrial Estate; the successful Citizen Science pilot project in which the local community in the Latrobe Valley were able to engage with, and contribute to, environmental monitoring; supporting Voices of the Valley with training and equipment to assist in their monitoring of local air quality; developing our capability with the addition of 14 new Authorised Officers; the renewal of our leadership team including the introduction of Nial Finegan as Chief Executive Officer.

3) Environment Protection Regulations Review
Update and consultation
Victoria’s Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) are reviewing the Environment Protection (Scheduled Premises and Exemptions) Regulations 2007 before they expire in mid-2017.

The Regulations cover a range of industrial and commercial activities with the potential for significant environmental impacts, and prescribe which premises are required to:
  •      obtain an EPA works approval
  •      obtain an EPA licence
  •      provide a financial assurance
Further information about the Regulations and the review is available on DELWP and EPA websites, including a discussion paper published by DELWP and EPA which outlines the scope of the Regulations and issues for consideration.
Submit feedback
The Discussion Paper is open for comment until 14 December 2015, and submissions can be made via our online questionnaire or as a written submission — access more information, view a submission template, and submit feedback here.
Next steps
Comments received on the questions in the Discussion Paper will help to inform the development of a regulatory impact statement and a draft of the proposed new Regulations, which are expected to be published in late 2016.
