From the
GT-AE Chair

After spending much of October visiting our colleagues in other states, I was very excited when so many fascinating people visited the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering this month. November was truly a time of Thanksgiving.

My good friends Dr.Tom Shih, the head of Purdue's School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and Dr. Eric Paterson, Virginia Tech's head of the School of Aerospace and Oceanic Engineering, each gave stimulating and well-received talks before standing-room-only audiences. We gave them each one of our much-coveted GT-AE polo shirts, but they gave us a lot to think about.

I think we got the bargain in that deal.

I was also honored to host a brief visit from a contingent of highly respected educators from China,
including the chancellor of the Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Our whirlwind tour was invigorating.

And dozens of industry and government leaders gathered at the Aerospace Systems Design Lab Nov. 16-18 for the Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise (CLEEN) Consortium, a NextGen effort to accelerate development and commercial deployment of environmentally promising aircraft technologies and sustainable alternative fuels.

It was a reality check and an inspiration.

That same week, experts from throughout industry and government descended on our School to conduct the annual review for the Vertical Lift Research Center of Excellence (VLRCOE).

We welcomed their scrutiny and benefited from their wisdom.

But I have to admit that, by far, the most treasured guests on campus this month were our alumni, who came from successful industry careers to recruit the next generation of aerospace innovators. Andrew Mahon, Phong Truong, and John "Buck" Bryan joined us from Delta Tech Ops, and Collin Heller visited us on behalf of ICF Aviation.

Nothing inspires success more vividly than alumni who have blazed the trail.

P.S. Please enjoy a few snapshots from these inspiring visits.

Maybe it's because tables recently published by the National Science Foundation indicate that Georgia Tech's Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering awarded the most PhDs of any AE school in the nation in 2014. That's 46 doctorates -- about 12 % of the nation's production.
