Textile and Design Lab on show in Milan

Co-Director, Dr Frances Joseph and Manager, Peter Heslop, represented the Textile and Design Lab at the recent International Textile Machinery Association’s (ITMA) Research and Education Pavilion in Milan. The lab showcased its design and research capabilities to a multitude of visitors ranging from other research and educational institutes to global industry players including Nike, Patagonia and IKEA. The lab’s representatives also delivered a presentation at the Speakers Platform covering the on-going AUT funded cross-disciplinary research into nano-fibre yarns, smart socks and e-textile applications for physiotherapy.

ITMA also presented the opportunity to see a vast range of new textile technologies under the one roof and attend the Digital Textile Printing Conference during the 8 day expo. The next show is scheduled for 2019 in Barcelona.

TDL Textile Design student awards

|
Second year Bachelor of Textile Design students, Nikki Walker and Kelly Fraser, were the recipients of this year’s TDL awards for their outstanding work. Both students have worked extensively with TDL Senior Technician, Gordon Fraser, this year and have both shown an exceptional aptitude for knitted textile design and programming on the Shima Seiki Apex systems under the tutorage of Lecturer, Rachelle Moore.

Our third year Art and Design School students showcased their work at the end of year Art and Design Festival last month whilst the final year Bachelor of Fashion Design students exhibited their work at the annual Rookie Show, which was held at the St James’ theatre in Auckland City on 12 November. Students from a wide range of disciplines took advantage of the lab’s increasing range of resources this year with visual artists, product designers, spatial designers and fashion and textiles students creating outstanding knitted, digitally printed and felted pieces.
