             NEWSLETTER & SCHEDULE
I wanted to take the time to mention all of our "after-hours" leaders at Smalls.  Smalls only recently in its history had an early set.  In the old days, Smalls never opened until nearly 11pm.  After-hours was what made Smalls famous in the first place.  For all practical purposes, the after hours is still the Smalls wheelhouse.  We're the oasis - the last man standing - when it comes to 2:45 AM and you want to hear some jazz music on some random Tuesday night.  The after-hours is for the professionals.  Of course, the professional musicians coming off their respective gigs.  But also for the professional "hangers" - the die-hard cats that just love to hang, night after night.  It's a career!

Most importantly it's the jam sessions that take place every night.  This is the hothouse for the new generation of musicians who are going to take this music into the future.  We observe these late sessions to see who's who.  The wheat from the chaff.  I've been trying to carefully choose late-night residencies for artists that I know are going to grow from the experience and also be able to share with musicians coming out to play.  To set a tone for the evening and a high standard and see who comes out.

All of these leaders alternate with other on these days.  They all bring in their own invited group to perform a short set and then host a jam session for the musicians who are there to play.  Each artist has his or her own style for leading a session and also their own clique of musicians that they bring out.

Mondays: Jonathan Michel/Jonathan Barber
Tuesdays: Kyle Poole/Corey Wallace,
Wedesdays: Sanah Kadoura/Aaron Seeber
Thursdays: Tony Hewitt/Tyler Clibbon
Sundays: Hillel Salem & Andrew Forman

On the weekends we also have after hours with some particularly distinguished band leaders and veteran jazz artists such as - Philip Harper, Joe Farnsworth, Lawrence Leathers, Stacy Dillard, Eric Wyatt and Tivon Pennicott.

I invite all interested parties, particularly musicians, to come out and hang late at Smalls.  You'll hear some great music and get introduced to the community of musicians who dwell there.
