Volume 22 Number 13 12/04/2015

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord."
—Luke 2:8-11

MISSION STATEMENT

Senior Spotlight

Meet Sarah Andrews and Skylar Kitzmiller

Hello, I'm Sarah Andrews.  I was born in Kerrville Texas on January 29, 1998 ,to my parents, Mark and Gatrel Andrews. I am the caboose of 7 children, having 4 older brothers and 2 older sisters. For kindergarten and first grade I, along with most of my other siblings, was homeschooled by my mom. During my first-grade year my parents decided to take me and a couple of my siblings to visit Heritage School. After visiting, it was decided that we would attend Heritage the following year. In December of my third-grade year, our family was able to move over to Fredericksburg. I am going on my eleventh year at Heritage and have enjoyed every moment here, from being challenged academically, to all of the sports I have had the opportunity to participate in, and finally in building all the friendships I have been able to enjoy.

I am Skylar Kitzmiller, I have lived in Fredericksburg my whole life.  I attended the public school until third grade, at which point I began a homeschooling adventure—an adventure that I soon would realize had massive ups and downs.  A great part about homeschooling was that I got to learn to think on my own and make my own decisions.  The challenge of this was perhaps that I was too shy and awkward around other people to ever voice these thoughts or opinions.  However, I didn't realize that this aversion to putting my opinions on a subject up for argument was unusual until my freshman year of high school, where I began to experience interacting with people outside of the sheltered bubble of Boy Scouts or the martial arts lessons I had while homeschooling.  My freshman year at Heritage rapidly opened my eyes to what I should not do in high school.  But I still hadn't figured out what I should be doing by my sophomore year.  Thankfully though, by this time I had made some close friends who wouldn't hesitate to inform me when I slid back into some awkward homeschooling social habits (or really lack of social habits altogether).  Then came my junior year; I finally felt that I had found my spot in my class, as well as in the school itself.  I felt as if I understood everyone in the class pretty well (I was wrong; I will never understand the women of my class), and I began to form closer relationships with all of my classmates, relationships built on mutual trust and appreciation.  Now though, I look back and wish that I had realized that the whole rollercoaster of an experience was great, and that I loved just about every second of it.  Freshman to senior year, four years— it seemed like such a long time when I was a little fourteen-year-old freshman, but now I find myself looking back and wondering how it passed so quickly.  This perspective does not come without new resolve though, a resolve to leave my mark with my fellow classmen and with the school in general.  I am resolved to make what I time I have left count, and to make these the fondest memories of high school yet.  I now realize that coming to Heritage was the gateway to a great world of new friends, new experiences, and most importantly, new faith.

Kids Youth Ranch…service project

Heritage Grammar School has a wonderful opportunity to help the directors of the Kids Youth Ranch in Ingram as well as Leakey.  The Youth Ranch is a facility that helps provide long term care for abused and orphaned children.

The grammar school has agreed to participate with their Christmas Angel program.  We have “adopted” two boys and are asking you to help purchase items (or send money to help purchase the items) from their wish list.

We have selected Armando.  He is a very inventive and inquisitive 11 year old that enjoys using his imagination and creating things with his hands.  His favorite color is red and his favorite sports team is the Cavaliers.  His favorite sport to play is basketball and his favorite place to shop is Hibbets.
Armando wears Youth sizes:
Shirt: 10/12             Coat: 10/12             Pants: 10/12            Shoes: 7

We also have selected Antuan.  He is a very active 9 year old who enjoys multi-tasking and staying busy. His favorite color is red and his favorite sport is basketball.  His favorite team to watch is the San Antonio spurs.  He is learning how to ride his bike and hopes to learn how to rollerblade.
Antuan wears Children’s sizes:
Shirts: Medium       Coat: Medium         Pants:            10                   Shoes:  6

If you choose to donate new items or cash, please have them turned into your child’s teacher by Wednesday, Dec. 2nd.  We believe that this will be a great project for those who would like to participate.  Please remember to keep these two boys and all other children at the Kids Youth Ranch in your prayers as they celebrate the coming holidays.

Early College Credit Registration Open for Spring

Central Texas College has opened its registration portal for Spring Semester classes. You should start the online application process at:   http://www.ctcd.edu/students/prospective-students/how-to-enroll/texas-students/   Complete the one-time online application to CTC, track down your SAT scores and make an appointment with Kristy Kothe at the Hill Country University Center (254-616-3401) You must be a junior or senior to register and are limited to two courses per semester.
More independent souls may find the ONLINE early college offerings at LeTourneau University more suitable: http://www.letu.edu/_Admissions/dualcredit/  Although LETU online students do not have designated online class times, they do have weekly deadlines for graded work. LETU courses cost about $360 each.
Early college credit not only saves thousands of tuition dollars ($328/course at CTC  compared to $950 at A&M and $3636 at Baylor), the gift of time and flexibility in your future college schedule can be more advantageous in pursuing a minor or double major. Also, the seniority attained by early college credit can make a huge difference at freshman registration. Of course, early college credits afford little advantage at all if your chosen major degree plan does not call for those courses or your target college does not accept the transfer. Mrs. Sauer can help you find that information and help you make a plan.
