Quilt Talk

Join us Monday, December 14 for
Our Annual Christmas Potluck

Don't be late! We start 30 minutes earlier.
We are doing it traditional again! No last name/ letter designations, just bring your favourite dishes, be it an appetizer, a main course or a dessert.

Bring what you make best! That is what makes an awesome pot luck dinner! As well, bring a plate and cutlery and a mug for the dinner!  (Some members bring place mats as well.)

Remember that for our Pot Luck meetings, the meeting starts 30 minutes early. Doors open at 6:30 and the meeting starts at 7:00pm.

I hope to see everyone there for a fabulous night of food and fun!

Tammy

President's Message

I'm writing this on December 6th, nineteen day’s till Christmas and like everyone  I still  have a few small projects to complete before Christmas.  Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year.  We catch up with family and friends, have special dinner’s, cake, cookies and especially candy.

Can you tell I am all about the food? Today is candy day in my house.

Christmas in our house will be spent with family and friends at home. I do hope you will have time to spend with family and friends and after the hustle and bustle of the holiday season you will have some quiet time to make a 2016 New Year’s resolution on some quilting projects.  Maybe finishing up some UFO’s, starting a bucket list project or even get started on some 2017  Christmas project.

From my Family to yours, have a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s and we will see you in 2016.

May all your Stitches be Forward

Quilt Show Update

Quilts- A Show of Hands

Scugog Community Arena,
Reach Road, Port Perry
Friday May 6th, 2016  10 am - 8 pm
Saturday May 7th, 2016 10 am - 5 pm

Show Challenge

Here’s your challenge, should you choose to participate! Create an original quilt to be  part of a group display at our show.

Theme: A Show of Many Hands

Concept: We’re hosting a handful of vendors who do fine craft, such as weaving, pottery, woodwork, to set up displays and sell their work at our guild show “A Show of Many Hands”.

Let’s celebrate the many processes of fine craft in whatever your solution is to this challenge.

Parameters:

• Size must be 24” x 24”

• Design must be original, and celebrate the theme of “ A Show of Hands”. The design can be traditional blocks, abstract or pictorial.

• Techniques can include any quilting method be it piecing, appliqué, thread painting, trapunto or
paper piecing etc.

• Your quilt must incorporate at least one additional piece of fine craft such as something
handwoven, knitted or sculpted. You could include hand-made lace, a piece of pottery or
jewelry or hand carved wood. You may include any fabric you wish.

• This extra fine craft item could be a piece of your grandmother’s rug hooking, a lace napkin
you bought at an antique store or a piece of jewelry you made yourself.

• The quilt must be finished with the usual three layers, quilted, bound in any method and it must
have a label and a hanging sleeve.

• Due date: April 18, 2016 (Guild night)

Your Personal To Do List

• Make a list of the quilts you’ve made since our last quilt show in May of 2012. You’ve probably made more than you realize. List the ones you’d like to show, and if you’ve given them away or sold them, ask to borrow them for the weekend.

• Make a list of the UFO’s you’d like to finish for the show.

• List the guild challenges quilts you’ve done.

• Plan to put hanging sleeves and labels on all quilts.

• Fill out an entry form for each quilt.

• Take a photo of each quilt and print off an image to go with you entry form.

• Make a list of the quilts you’d like to sell. All sales will be handled in our Guild Shop.
Commission to the guild is 20% of retail. Large quilts will hang in the show, and smaller items will go in the Guild Shop.

• Consider what you can make to donate to the Guild (remember that the money we raise at the show pays for our guest speakers for the next three years!) Our committee will select items to go in the Guild Shop, Silent Auction or Chinese Auction. Make things you like to make: baby quilts, runners, placemats, art quilts, wallets, purses, aprons.

• We are adding non-quilt items to our Silent Auction. Could you or a company you know,
donate an item or gift basket?

• Register your large bed quilts by January 18 guild night

• Register all other quilts by March 21 guild night.

Community Outreach

I played Santa this morning delivering goodies to our community.

First stop was Grandview Children's Centre where half of our Christmas stockings went along with several quilts from our Orphan Blocks program. The quilts and stockings will ensure that the families at risk are helped. Here is part of the email communications from Andrea Belanger, our contact at Grandview:

"We have 2 families in need of some Christmas cheer this holiday season.
1. Mom, teenage bot, 10 year old girl, 6 year old boy and 4 year old girl.
2. Parents, 4 year old girl and toddler boy
That would be 9 people in total, 6 under the age of 18.
We would love to raffle off a quilt as a door prize during our Sensory Santa event on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Any child who came to see Santa could have a chance to win."

Andrea and her Christmas Elves were on hand today to help spread some Christmas Cheer.

My next stop was to Community Care in Port Perry. Our previous contact, Lynn Pike, has retired so I had the pleasure of meeting Donna Holmes. Donna is the new Service Coordinator, Home Support Scugog. She is delighted to have our placemats in time for Meals on Wheels. The final meal delivery is on December 23rd so please bring any additional placemats to our December meeting so they can be distributed. Donna had a great idea for a new program for next year. More to follow on that in a later newsletter. Community Care also received several of our Orphan Block quilts for the day program. I hope Lynn is enjoying her retirement!

For anyone who would like to continue to make stockings or placemats I will be bringing patterns, fabric and batting to our December meeting and after that everything will be available in the Guild stash at Quilters Cupboard, downstairs.

THIS JUST IN:

Subject: Thank you for making our clients Christmas just that much brighter

Hi Robin,
We wish to thank you and the Port Parry Patchers Quilt Guild for the beautiful placemats and lap quilts. Thank you for thinking of the needs of our clients at this very special time of year and your sharing your talents to create such beautiful work. These gifts are sure to make our clients Christmas just that much brighter. The placemats will add that  festive touch and the lap quilts will warm the hearts and minds of our Adult Day program clients. From all of us at Community Care Durham, we wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas.

Once again, we thank you for your generous donation.

Merry Christmas,
Lorrie Houston, Administrator

CQA National Juried Show

Toronto June 15-18, 2016

As well as preparing for our Port Perry Patchers Guild Show in May 2016, the next CQA show will be in Toronto next June; this is a great opportunity to try entering your pieces into a national juried show.

For those who would like to take up this challenge, I’ve done a bit of research on dates and requirements, so that you know that you can enter your quilt into both the Patchers Guild Show and the National Juried Show (NJS).
For NJS:
  • Quilt must be completed after January 1, 2014
  • Quilt must not have been shown in a Canadian national juried show prior to June 2016
  • Written permission is required from designer/publisher/instructor if you used a book or pattern or started the quilt in class or workshop
  • Quilt must be completed (and photo’d) by February 3, 2016
  • Notification of acceptance to quilter on February 26, 2016
  • Accepted pieces are to be shipped to NJS May 25-June 3, 2016

See the CQA website for more details about entries. Also, check out rest of the CQA website for the list of workshops offered from a wide variety of instructors and the volunteer opportunities to get involved with the show.
