Deagon Ward E-News

Christmas 2015

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. It has been a privilege serving as local councillor since August this year and I look forward to working with residents in Zillmere, Boondall, Taigum, Sandgate, Deagon, Shorncliffe, Brighton & Moreton Island in 2016.

While I grew up and have lived locally all my life, there are pllenty of things I have learnt about this amazing community. There are many organisations and individuals in our community doing some amazing work do without recognition. Stirling Hinchliffe and I have been able to nominate a few of these unsung heros for Lilley Australia Day Awards.

I have launched a new Planning & Development e-news service for local residents that you can sign up to by click here. This regular e-news will include details of recently lodged applications for development in the Deagon Ward so you can keep up to date with development in your suburb.

Keep an eye out on my Facebook page to keep up to date with local news and events.

My office will close at 12.00PM on Thursday December 24 and reopen on Monday January 4.

If you are part of a local community group and want me to feature an upcoming event in my e-news please contact my office to arrange this.

Cheers & Merry Christmas

Out and About in the Community

Rock Under the Clock

The third Rock Under the Clock was a smash hit! Jim Hanson and the Sonics, with support from new singer Nicky. This year the Sandgate PCYC was the beneficiary of the ticket sales and Sandgate Rotary assisted on the night with drink sales. There were also a number of major sponsors including local businesses Cross Country Tours, Hello World Sandgate and State Member Stirling Hinchliffe and I. I look forward to next year's successful event.

Rotary Carols & Christmas in Sandgate

I was asked to be the MC for Rotary's Carols in the Park this year which was a lot of fun. We had junior and senior choirs from Sandgate, Nashville, Brighton and Boondall State Schools this year. The music teachers did a fantastic job in coordinating a large choir and I know the audience loved every minute of it.

Sandgate Hawks Auskick Presentations

It was great to attend and help Gayle and Chris out with KinderKick and AusKick presentations at the Sandgate Hawks. This program is growing in popularity and was the first time they have done it over summer. If you want to enrol your son or daughter in AusKick contact the Sandgate Hawks

White Ribbon Day at Boondall

It was great to attend the Boondall Police Station White Ribbon Day morning tea with Stirling Hincliffe, Leanne Linard and the wider community. It was great to hear from White Ribbon Ambassador Petro Civoniceva about the need for men to take a stand against domestic violence against women. This campaign has been growing over recent years and it's important message is that we can all make a difference in our communities.

Eventide Forum

The Independent Steering committee established to help determine the future use of the Brighton Health Campus, Eventide. This Steering Committee is being headed by Denise Herbert and includes health professionals, staff and community members. The outcome of these discussions will be taken out to the community for feedback and comment. It is fantastic to see the State Labor Government following through on it's commitment to the future of this site.

Fishin' for Freedom

I had a great day at the Fishin' for Freedom fishing competition at Baxter's Jetty recently. This great local not for profit organisation headed my Matt Price. Fishin’ for Freedom was established to provide that outlet for participants that want to go fishing but either don’t have the gear, a friend to go with or the knowhow but want to learn. We can provide people that have skills in fishing and that live and breathe fishing and that are just looking for that next reason to go.

Fishin for Freedom supports:

  • People with a disability
  • ADF members (ex & current) that have acquired a physical injury or PTSD while on duty and their families.
  • Police, Fire & Ambulance staff (ex & current) that have acquired a physical injury or PTSD while on duty.

Shorncliffe Pier Sculpture Opening

Our historic Shorncliffe Pier Sculpture will be official unveiled on Saturday 19 December from 3.00-5.00pm. This opening will coincide with the Sandgate Mum's Christmas Picnic in the park. Please bring a picnic rug and basket. I will be providing a free sausage sizzle and cool drinks too.

This sculpture is made using timber from the original Shorncliffe Pier. It will have lighting to maker it safe at night time and also showcase its beauty. The Artist Stephen Newton will be attending the official opening and Santa will be making a special appearance for the kids!

There is a lucky door prize for those who attend with the prize being a Pier clock made by the Sandgate Men's Shed.

Community Christmas & New Year Events

While Christmas is almost upon us, there are still a few activities you can enjoy with your family before the day. There are also a number of new year activities happening locally also.

Australia Day By The Bay

Wayne Swan and I will be hosting Australia Day by the Bay in 2016 which is shaping up to be a great community day. We will have everyone's favourite clowns Peebo & Dagwood, Cricket and AFL games, entertainment and food. I hope to see you there on Australia Day.
