MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This week many parents approached me to talk about safety concerns. It is a timely topic and made me look up a note from a few years back.  As there are new Ivanhoe families and new realities, revisiting the concerns seems apropos.

Ivanhoe is a special place. We are, in all the best ways, a true community, a word that connotes fellowship and shared goals. We look after one another and work to support each other in more ways than need be counted. For many of us, Ivanhoe feels like a second home where we feel safe, protected and nurtured. In this spirit, we need to readjust our thinking to consider some safety areas where we have become lulled into a false sense of security. For convenience, we have, on occasion, left entries open for one another. While this is an act of courtesy, leaving the doors or gates open for someone coming in late or for someone in a hurry also compromises the security of all the students and staff on campus. The safety of the 458 students and staff must become our most important shared goal and responsibility.

LAUSD dictates that every school is a locked, secured campus. The office needs to be aware of every visitor who is on campus at all times.

  • After 8:20 am the main gate near the office is an emergency exit only- all visitors & volunteers need to enter and exit through the main office.
  • All visitors/volunteers need to sign in and receive either a volunteer badge or a yellow visitor pass before entering the campus.
  • If you are leaving late materials for your child, please leave them in the office.  A classroom monitor will be called to pick up the lunch/homework during an appropriate break in the instructional program.
  • The only exit/entrance areas will be through the Herkimer street gate or Main Office door.

As a final note, I want to stress that each of us has a vested interest in the safety and education of our children. The collaboration and communication that exists between us will guarantee success.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Our Safety Committee meets monthly and we always welcome new voices.

COMMUNITY GIVING CONTINUES -
Food Drive and Children’s Hospital Clothing Drive

Please continue donations to the Ivanhoe Holiday Food Drive being coordinated by the 4th grade Junior Girl Scout Troop 12545. This effort provides groceries to families in our community to help make their holidays happy, healthy, and delicious. Please bring non-perishable foods to the drop boxes by the office and the auditorium on any day this week.  The Holidays from the Heart program is also underway and we will be collecting new items for patients at Children’s Hospital and their families until December 20th. Please grab a gingerbread man with an item description and bring your new items to school for collection.

THANK YOU FOR A GREAT HOLIDAY SAMPLE SALE!

The Ivanhoe community really made a great showing at our annual Holiday Sample Sale! Thank you to all the wonderful businesses and volunteers who brought their wares and made delicious comestibles for the customers at the sale.  Special thanks to the amazing organizers Laura Mullen, Amanda Nelson and Megan Fales, to our PR champ Tara de Sousa, and all the wonderful artisans and vendors who donated their services and a portion or all of their profits to our school.  We are so grateful to Molly Bruns, Jill Burrows and Ami Mann for organizing and staffing our fantastic bake sale and to Ostrich Farm and SquareOne for their donations of brunch and lunch foods, and to zpizza for pizza! Our tireless treasurers, Jeannie Change and Grace Lin, made sure every penny of  the profits for the vendors (and for Ivanhoe!) were counted and carried away to the bank. Bravo everyone!  Let’s do it again next year!

Please patronize the fantastic folks who participated in our event for your gift-giving needs throughout the year: Trina Turk, Verre, Megan Fales, MyTote, Lucky Fish, Gamine Jewelry, The O’Dells, Cameo, The Folding Room, Stark, Rummage and Hollow, Wal&Pai, Sirpa, Susu Handmade Soaps, Kim White, Butik Showroom, Monkey House Toys, Treehaus, Modkom Home Design, Charlie and Marcelle, George and Joe, Mason Grace, Chester and Co., Wildfox, Agent Icon Showroom, and Max & Bean!
