On behalf of the Jubilee Scotland coalition I wanted to take a moment at this time of year, when we know you will be inundated with requests for donations, to simply say:

Thank you.

Your contribution during the Big Give Christmas Challenge last year made a huge difference.

Because of your support we are making Scotland a nation of debt justice, lending our voices to calls and actions around the world and achieving real change.  2015 campaign highlights include:

  • Helping to secure over 100,000 signatures calling for debt justice for Greece

  • Putting debt relief for Nepal on the agenda for the head of the Asian Development Bank

  • Winning debt relief for Ebola-stricken Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone

  • Mobilising Scottish MPs at Westminster to take a stand against creating a new debt crisis

However, a new debt crisis is looming, thanks to a renewed lending boom to developing countries and falling commodity prices. Even countries which qualified for debt relief are rapidly moving towards debt distress.

Looking ahead to 2016, Scotland is poised to take real action on debt workouts, a critical component to dealing with unjust debt in a fair and transparent manner.

Creditor countries like the UK are stalling progress towards debt workouts at the UN. But here in Scotland we have a framework for sovereign debt workouts under Scots Law that we launched together with Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Europe and External Affairs for the Scottish Government.

Putting this framework into action will provide an essential space here in Scotland for countries seeking debt arbitration with human rights and sustainable development at its core.

While the unique potential of this work was not picked up on by the Big Give Christmas Challenge, which we were not selected to participate in this year, the debt arbitration campaign will be a focus for us in the year ahead and we look forward to mobilizing the Jubilee coalition and our supporters to get behind this initiative in the coming months.

Thank you again for all of your commitment and support, and best wishes for the festive season.

Ashley
