County health educator awarded spirit award

12/07/15 LICKING COUNTY, OHIO – Licking County Health Department’s Carrie Minor, MPH, CHES, was awarded the 2015 Patty Kuun Ohio Society for Public Health Education’s (SOPHE) Spirit Award. Minor is a Health Educator at the department and the county’s Safe Communities Coordinator.

As the Southeast District Representative for Ohio SOPHE, Minor took on her role enthusiastically and volunteered for many additional tasks throughout the year. She volunteered as the Health Education Institute Conference registration co-chair – a large undertaking. Minor also volunteered to fill the marketing position when it unexpectedly became vacant during the society’s re-branding efforts. Minor remained an active board member while balancing her full-time job at the department.

“[Participating] provides me with various opportunities for professional development and networking, and opportunities to learn different roles and responsibilities outside of my current position at the Health Department,” said Minor.

Former President Dr. Megan Amaya presented Minor with the award at the 2015 Health Educator’s Institute Conference at Deer Creek Resort Oct. 22.

“Honestly, I didn’t seek out to receive this award at all,” said Minor. “So needless to say I was pretty surprised. At the beginning of the year I set a professional goal for myself to get more involved and grow professionally in some new areas with Ohio SOPHE. You just can’t help but get caught up in the work we do as the Ohio SOPHE chapter and working with the other members.”

Minor says her favorite part of receiving the award is knowing she achieved the goal she set for herself at the beginning of the year. “But really, Ohio SOPHE has done more for me than I have for it,” she said. She admits it was a fun year of learning and growing.

Ohio SOPHE Spirit Award was established in 2009 to remember the positive spirit and longtime dedication of Patty Kuun to the organization. It is awarded annually to an Ohio SOPHE member who shows exceptional spirit and dedication to Ohio SOPHE.

“Kudos to you Carrie – you truly embody Patty’s spirit, her love and dedication to Ohio SOPHE,” said Mary Kramer, Ph.D., MPH, MCHES. “We are a better chapter because of your efforts!”

“Anyone, professional or student, who is involved with health education, promotion or public health should absolutely join Ohio SOPHE,” said Minor. “You can find out more about membership by visiting www.ohiosophe.org. Check us out on Facebook too.” The Ohio SOPHE can be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/OhioSOPHE.
“The Licking County Health Department serves more than 160,000 citizens in the Licking County General Health District by preventing disease, protecting the environment and promoting healthy lifestyles with a vision of healthy people living in healthy communities.”
