About OASIS

The O.A.S.I.S. Group is a non-profit 501(c)(3) dedicated to providing active duty and former United States Special Operations Command members, Prisoners of War, and their dependents with technical advice and assistance pertaining to issues and claims filed with the Departments of Veterans Affairs. We do this at no cost to the service member/veteran and receive no compensation whatsoever.

In FY 2015, OASIS provided outreach informational briefings and claims assistance to 1,314 SOF veterans and active duty from various organizations. Besides the quarterly briefings held at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, OASIS personnel traveled to more than a dozen locations throughout the US conducting information briefings, answering questions and assisting personnel with completing claims for VA benefits. It is important to keep in mind that the Special Operations community is represented by all four services and OASIS is there for them all.

OASIS is now listed in the Guidestar Exchange (a who's who in the non-profit community) with a Silver rating.

Automobile Allowance

It isn't new, but it's worth repeating: Service members and Veterans may be eligible for a one-time payment of not more than $20,114.34 toward the purchase of an automobile or other conveyance if they have certain service-connected disabilities. The grant is paid directly to the seller of the automobile and the Service member or Veteran may only receive the automobile grant once in his/her lifetime.

Certain Service members and Veterans may also be eligible for adaptive equipment. Adaptive equipment includes, but is not limited to, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seats, and special equipment necessary to assist the eligible person into and out of the vehicle. VA may provide financial assistance in purchasing adaptive equipment more than once. This benefit is payable to either the seller or the Veteran or Service member.

Important: You must have prior VA approval before purchasing an automobile or adaptive equipment
Some disabilities that would likely qualify for the benefit include:

  • Loss, or permanent loss of use, of one or both feet
  • Loss, or permanent loss of use, of one or both hands
  • Permanent impairment of vision in both eyes to a certain degree
  • Severe burn injury
  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (AL)

OASIS Alumni and the Giving Spirit

Anyone who's ever had a one on one conversation with one of our representatives about VA benefits has established a relationship that we feel is important to maintain. Conditions change and so does the VA. We want to continue to be the source of information you need to keep your benefits current and relevant, and we want to stay in touch so you always know how to reach us. That's why we've started the OASIS Alumni program. All it is really is a line of communication between you and us. We'll send you our quarterly newsletter and you can count on us to be there when you need help with the VA.

If there is one thing we hear over and over again from our alumni when helping them with their claims, it's thank you. Once you have gone through the process with us filing a claim with the VA, it becomes obvious that there is more to it than filling out a few forms. That's why we're usually asked after the interview "How can I help?" OASIS alumni know first-hand the important work we do, and despite being 100% volunteers, OASIS still incur costs in our efforts to get the message out.  While we have never and will never charge a fee for the services we provide, we are always thankful for individual and corporate donations. Will you please take a moment, visit our web site and make a tax deductible donation? Go to the bottom of the page at www.oasisgrp.org or click the button below to donate.

"I Didn't Know..."

Those are the three common words heard across fraternal organizations when it comes to
VA benefits. It is common to find Viet Nam era veterans with multiple, often serious illnesses or injuries who have never filed a claim with the VA. Most often their reasons are that they didn't know that a sprained knee in service can often be tied to the knee re- placement surgery they just had.

For nearly two generations, no American has been obligated to join up, and few do. Less than 0.5 percent of the population serves in the armed forces, compared with more than 12 percent during World War II. Disabled veterans should expect to be compensated for their sacrifices.
VA Changes

Healthcare
Since January 2015 the VA ceased using net-worth assets to determine whether you have a cost share when you receive VA treatment. It also ceased using net worth to determine your category of eligibility. Perhaps you have substantial assets but are living on a small, fixed income. The new rules could eliminate your cost share and raise your category of care. Perhaps it's time to reconsider VA healthcare.

Specially Adapted Housing
The Secretary of Veterans Affairs announced for FY 2016 the aggregate amounts of assistance available to veterans and service members eligible or SAH program grants. Effective October 1, 2015, the aggregate amount of assistance available for SAH grants made pursuant to 38 U.S.C. 2101(a) is $73,768 during FY 2016.

Personnel Shortages
Based on its review, the IG identified the following five occupations as having the largest staffing shortages as calculated over the 5-year period preceding the determination.: Medical Officer, Nurse, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapist, and Psychologist.
