Many people stay at our Emergency Homeless Shelter. Some stay for a night and others stay as long as 3 months. We recently had a Grandmother and her granddaughter stay with us.
Miss Ruth had left her home in Georgia to take custody of her granddaughter after realizing she could not stay with her daughter. She came to RCS seeking safe shelter and a place to get back on their feet. Miss Ruth's granddaughter was able to continue at her current school while she volunteered at the shelter and figured out a way to establish a new home for the two of them.
RCS provided assistance to Miss Ruth and after just 8 weeks, she and her granddaughter were able to move out of the shelter into their new home.
This type of story is not uncommon at our shelter. We continue to provide a safe shelter and resources that allow many of our guests to take control of their future.

RCS receives generous donations for Holidays
We are blessed with some very generous individuals and groups and would like to share some November/December highlights:

• UPHC Rocky Run Church helped us give away coats to nearly 175 individuals at the Winter Coat Giveaway on November 7
• Malcolm Quay and the Neuse River Back Water Open donated $5000 and 350 pound of fresh fish from their annual fishing tournament held in October
• The Annual Holiday Show at the Riverfront Convention Center collected nearly 5000 pounds of food November 13-15
• Pastor Paulette Bryant from Biblical House of God donated $250 and is working on expansion partnership with RCS
• The Tryon Civitans collected 1100 pounds of food and donated $850 to RCS from their Annual Food Drive held in October
• Zabby from 4th Grade Epiphany donated food and supplies that she collected for her birthday
• Craven Early College assisted with TEFAP on November 18, serving nearly 2000 individuals in critical hunger
• Hatteras/Cabo donated food, water and WalMart gift certificates
• Roger Grear and family cooked 24 turkeys and all the fixings to serve on Thanksgiving Day
• MOEN donated about 4000 pounds of food and water
• Retired teachers from H. J. MacDonald donated over 50 blankets for the Shelter
• New Bern Breakfast Rotary donated $500 in honor of Terry Tait to use for scholarships
• Fairfield Harbour Yacht Club donated 3000 pounds of food and $600 from their annual food drive
• Carolina Pines Home & Garden Club donated 32 sets of bath towels and wash cloths wrapped and ready for Christmas
• New Bern Civitan Club donated and installed two sets of washers and dryers for the Shelter

Representative G. K. Butterfield to Visit RCS
Recently, Mayor Dana Outlaw, Aldermen Dallas Blackiston, Pat Schaible, and Johnny Ray Kinsey visited RCS to tour our facility and learn about the growing needs of our community and the services that RCS provides to service those needs. This visit has prompted a special visit from Representative G. K. Butterfield scheduled for January. We are very proud of our efforts and welcome the opportunity to discuss ways to improve what, for many, are dire situations of hunger and homelessness. Without the collaboration of community leaders, local officials, and dedicated volunteers and staff, not much will change. RCS welcomes groups and/or individuals to tour our facility and learn about the growing needs of our community and what RCS does to help. We are always in need of responsible and caring volunteers, as well as ways to bridge organizations that can work together for the common good. RCS Annex kicks off new Craven Community College class series with Forklift Certification and Job Training
The RCS Annex will host the first in a series of classes offered through Craven Community College as we partner together in an effort to help provide solid education and employment opportunities for those in need. We are looking for sponsors to help fund our "Scholar Dollars" scholarships that will assist students taking classes. Our first class is Forklift Certification and Job Training and it begins this week 12/9-12/22 Mon-Thu 9:15 a.m.-2 p.m. at RCS Annex. Cost: $70.60, Lunch provided daily. CARTS Stop #8.
