Nearly 200 nations sign deal to end the fossil fuel era

After two weeks of negotiations, delegates from 195 nations adopted the Paris climate change deal intended to keep global warming "well below" 2°C. Circular economy and innovation were at the heart of this annual Conference of Parties, especially with the Sustainable Innovation Forum where business leaders agreed that circular economy is key to sustainable growth. EuropaBio also took part in the discussion and emphasized the role that industrial biotechnology will play in helping put the brakes on climate change. Read more in our press release

Innovation and Intellectual Property are vital to the EU

“To bring innovative agricultural products to the market, public institutions and private companies, including SMEs, need intellectual property protection”, said MEP Paul Rübig, host of EuropaBio’s event on the benefits from patent protection on plant-related inventions, which took place during the 7th European Innovation Summit. The Summit confirmed as well support for the ‘innovation principle’ to contribute to a sensible and science-based approach to policy making. During the ‘Smart Regulation & Innovation for EU Agriculture’ event hosted by MEP Anthea McIntyre, the Agri-Food Chain Coalition and the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking demonstrated the value of innovation and pointed to administrative burdens and dysfunctional regulatory systems as the main disincentives for investment in EU innovation. “Technological innovation is a vital part of the solution. Agricultural technologies, in particular, have the potential to make farming more productive and more sustainable,” commented McIntyre. During the plenary session of the Summit, Nathalie Moll, EuropaBio Secretary General, insisted on the need to remove barriers to market access at EU and member states level for all biotech sectors.

Organic farmers really do care for their land and want to balance their impact on the land with producing healthier foods and improving the health of the soil. The Conversation tells you how GM crop plants with enhanced nutritional qualities, pest and disease resistance, larger grain sizes and the ability to produce more food with lower fertiliser inputs can benefit organic farmers too.

Industrial biotech

The plastics industry relies heavily on isobutene, a chemical made by superheating crude oil. A newly invented catalyst enables the eco-friendly production of isobutene from biobased ethanol. Testing showed it could also work on other biobased feed stocks similar to ethanol and suggests there is room for the catalyst in the marketplace.
