In the District alone, it’s expected to explode into a $120 million industry in four short years, say experts from D.C. based New Frontier Financials, which produces financial reports analyzing the marijuana market. And the region can look westward to a thriving market in Washington state and Colorado, where the marijuana industry employs nearly 16,000, raised $6 million for government coffers and is slated to top the billion-dollar mark by 2020.

With the cannabis industry booming in states like Colorado, Washington and California, it may be surprising that a new startup has decided to take root in Philadelphia. While marijuana laws are certainly more relaxed in the city thanks to legislation decriminalizing small amounts of weed, Pennsylvania is hardly a bastion of progressive thought when it comes to marijuana legislation. But that could change with the introduction of Greenhouse Ventures’ first Demo Day on Dec. 5.

Judging by all the studies that have been conducted in hopes of understanding marijuana’s effect on the brain, the verdict is still out. While some evidence has shown long-term marijuana use can lead to decreased cognition, poor attention, loss of memory, and decreased IQ, others have shown that marijuana is much less damaging on the brain than alcohol.

Marijuana Legalization 2015: Major Pot Activist Quits Marijuana Policy Project, Says Industry is Taking Over Movement

One of the most telling developments didn’t capture any headlines. That was the announcement that Dan Riffle, federal policy director for the powerful national advocacy group Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) and one of the most outspoken advocates of cannabis legalization, was quitting his job.
|
|
|
As Riffle noted in an email to colleagues in early November, the "industry is taking over the legalization movement and I’m not interested in the industry.” That same day, MPP announced a new political campaign funded by marijuana industry revenues.
