When Quality Counts

Choosing The Right Vineyard Tie

Choosing the correct vineyard tie seems straight-
forward and simple, really a no-brainer.  However, often times vineyard managers chose their tie for the wrong reasons, usually picking the cheapest product available.  Choosing the correct tie can potentially save countless hours of labor and money and improve yields.

The "correct" vineyard tie to use depends upon the type of pruning method used and the age of the vine.  The vineyard tie is supposed to help the vine maintain the "correct" shape or structure of the vine to the trellis until the vine itself can keep the correct shape.  The tie should not girdle the vine yet should NOT be required to be cut and removed at any time in the future.

CANED PRUNED VINEYARDS
Cane pruned vines should be tied using a degradable type of tie, that will last a single growing season.  It is critical that the tie last only a single season due to the nature of cane pruned vines. The PROTHEC system is the ideal tieing system to tie cane pruned vines as well as for tieing spur pruned vineyard during the initial establishment period.  The Prothec line of degradable vineyard ties consists of a range of ties and an inexpensive durable hand tool that is used to quickly and easily tie the tie.  The prothec line of degradable ties include (6) types of tie spools:

2-wire Beige - A photo degradable 2-wire tie designed to last (1) year, suitable for tieing young vines not mature enough to bear fruit. Roll length: 1100'

3-wire Green - A photo degradable 3-wire tie designed to last (1) year, suitable for tieing fruit bearing vines.  Also available in a "special degradation" formula for excessively dry environments. Roll length: 1100'

2-wire Brown - A photo degradable 2-wire tie designed to last (1.5 - 2) years, suitable for tieing fruit bearing vines in consistently windy vineyards, such as in coastal areas that are generally windy. Roll length: 1100'

3-wire Black - A special photo degradable 3-wire tie designed to last (3+) years, suitable for tieing fruit very mature vines and often times used to train raspberries. Roll length: 1100'

2-wire Bio - A certified BIO-degradable 2-wire tie designed to last (1) year, suitable for tieing young vines not mature enough to bear fruit.  The tie contains only certified bio material and is made of grape juice extract and milk protein.  The BIO tie transforms into compost after falling onto the ground and mixing with the soils, and does not contain any petroleum based additives.  The BIO tie is the only certified BIo tie available. Roll length: 1100'

3-wire Bio - A certified BIO-degradable 3-wire tie designed to last (1) year, suitable for tieing fruit bearing vines.  The tie contains only certified bio material and is made of grape juice extract and milk protein.  The BIO tie transforms into compost after falling onto the ground and mixing with the soils, and does not contain any petroleum based additives.  The BIO tie is the only certified BIo tie available. Roll length: 1100'

Prothec Tie Tool - An affordable easy to use tie tool designed to tie the PROTHEC line of degradable ties.  With proper care, the tool will last for years.  Spare parts are available and include replacement blades, replacement springs and replacement gears.

SPUR PRUNED VINEYARDS
Established spur pruned vines do not need to be tied every season.  The appropriate tie should be a long-lasting stretchable tie strong enough to support the cordons onto the top of the fruit wire, yet have the ability to stretch to accommodate vine growth.  Cordons should not be wrapped around the fruit wire.  The cordon should simply "lay" on top of the wire.  The stretchable line of PROTHEC ties includes light and heavy CEP.

CEP, Light - A lightweight stretchable hand tie suitable for tieing young established cordons.  CEP light has a lifespan of app 5-7 years.  Roll length: 660'

CEP, Heavy - A strong stretchable hand tie suitable for tieing young, established MATURE cordons.  CEP heavy has a lifespan of 10+ years. Roll length: 330'.
