Nurses Play a Vital Role in the New Federal Government

On the morning of November 4, 2015, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was sworn in and named his new 31-member cabinet. The Minister of Health appointed was Dr. Jane Philpott. "Dr. Jane Philpott's background in family medicine suggests, she has a deep understanding of the primary health care approach, an approach that needs to be enhanced in Canada to meet the needs of today's population," said CNA president Karima Velji.

Prior to entering politics, she was a family physician at Markham Stouffville Hospital for more than 15 years. Dr. Philpott also served as Chief of the Department of Family Medicine at Markham Stouffville Hospital from 2008-2014 and an Associate Professor in the University of Toronto's Department of Family & Community Medicine.  She is also known for promoting medical education in Africa, her support and fundraising related to HIV/AIDS, refugee advocacy, and her work on addressing the social encouragement of health. She also has numerous awards in the health care field.
We would like take this time to congratulate Dr. Philpott in her success!

We'd also like to congratulate the following former and current nurses who won seats in the federal election:
* First-time Liberal MP Kamal Khera, elected to the Brampton West riding
* First-time Liberal MP Eva Nassif, elected to the Vimy riding
* Christine Moore, NDP MP, re-elected to the Abitibi-T‚miscamingue riding
* Cathy McLeod, Conservative MP, re-elected to the Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo riding

Thank you for representing the nursing profession and for your efforts in strengthening and supporting a healthier and stronger Canada!
