Inaugural Edition of SENAonline
DECEMBER 2015 • volume 1, number 1

WELCOME!

Welcome to the first edition of the Standish-Ericsson Neighborhood Association's new online newsletter! We look forward to sharing a wide variety of information with you each month. Please bear with us, as there will definitely be some changes to both the content and the format over the next few months. Changes will be brought about by reader feedback, and they may also occur depending on the degree of difficulty of gathering information from our sources.

We have been extremely proud of our award-winning, printed bimonthly newsletter, SENA News, yet it was an extremely costly, and time-intensive neighborhood initiative. While we enjoyed the luxury of two, highly-skilled volunteers (plus many others) who put each edition together, the simple cost of printing and mailing thousands of newsletters every other month was a significant drain on SENA's increasingly limited resources.
Have a suggestion? Ideas for future editions? Name suggestions for this newsletter? Send them to news@standish-ericsson.org. Share your photographs of the neighborhood! While SENA will make every effort to include your news, we can make no guarantees they can be included in an upcoming edition.
Getting this first edition out has taken longer than we anticipated. We apologize for the delay in getting this first edition to you. Hopefully we will be on a regular monthly schedule from now on.

The format of this newsletter is simple. While the categories may change from month to month—depending upon available news—you will usually find sections dedicated to noteworthy events in the area, news about our parks, schools, and libraries, as well as local articles that have some relevance to the Standish and Ericsson neighborhoods. When you see an item highlighted in BLUE, you can click on it for further information.
Publication & Submission Dates
Our intention is to send this newsletter by the first Wednesday of a month. If you would like to submit something to us for possible inclusion, you must send it to the Editor by last Friday of a month.

Master Planning for all Parks in our 5th District

As you likely know, the park at Lake Hiawatha recently underwent a 15 month master planning process (read the Nokomis-Hiawatha Regional Park Master Plan). More recently, the MPRB is making a new plan for all the parks south of downtown and east of 35W. This part of the park system is called the South Service Area, and it features 35 park properties. The fifth district makes up the lower south section of this service area. Visit the project page to subscribe to updates.

Park board staff is sharing initial designs for neighborhood parks within the South Service Area at four Open Houses during the month of December. These initial designs are the result of guidance provided by the Community Advisory Committee, Technical Advisory Committee and data collected from the public at events this summer and fall.

***Sibley Park is included in the Central Zone ***

Central Zone Open House: Thursday, Dec 3, 6 - 8 pm

Message from Met Council on upcoming testing at Minnehaha Park

Met Council wants to alert the community of soil testing work that Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES) will be doing the weeks of Nov. 30 and Dec. 7 at Minnehaha Park. The findings from this testing will help guide the design of rehabilitation and upgrades needed in the regional sanitary sewer facilities located in the park. The work will take place on the west side of Minnehaha Creek, north of Minnehaha Parkway. In an effort to better understand the subsurface conditions near these sewer facilities, MCES will conduct additional soil borings and collect rock cores.  This effort will include angle cores in an effort to locate any highly transmissive vertical joints in the limestone formation. Water samples also will be collected and evaluated to determine the groundwater chemistry. Once the design of the sewer rehabilitation is completed, Met Council will hold additional public information meetings to discuss when and how the sewer rehabilitation work will take place.  If have any questions, please contact Tim O'Donnell, Project Citizen Liaison/Sr. Information Coordinator at tim.odonnell@metc.state.mn.us or 651.602.1269

CRIME & SAFETY

Stay Informed.

Expecting a package? Take steps to make sure you receive what you ordered.

With Holiday shopping online increasing, please take extra steps to make sure you get what you order.

When you consider all the online shopping we do now, sadly it's not all that surprising that doorstep delivery can be a crime of opportunity. It may not be someone following a delivery truck but someone who happens to be in the area and sees a package delivered. In looking at the most frequently used delivery services, here are some suggestions the shippers have made.

• Before you ship, choose the right service for your needs.

• Ship the package to a location where you know someone will be available to receive it. Consider selecting the “signature required” option.

• Some shippers can tell you the exact date and approximate time when your package will arrive. Have someone available to take possession of the package at its destination.

• You have options on how you want the package delivered as well as tracking and insuring the package.

• As neighbors, if you see something suspicious such as a person picking up a package off your neighbor’s front step or a car following a delivery van, please call 9-1-1 immediately.

If you are a victim of this crime, please contact 3-1-1 or file a police report online.
Let's be honest, utility boxes are ugly.

But this doesn't mean that anyone should be willing to tolerate the random, senseless tagging that we see from time to time. SENA doesn't have the time or resources to cover every utility box with art (you may have seen some the SENA sponsored artwork at the intersection of E 38th St and 28th Ave S, or at E 44th St and 28th Ave S).

SENA, as well as the MPD, needs your help in reporting graffiti and tagging where you see it. If you have a smartphone, reporting couldn't be easier.
Just download the 311 app for you iPhoneAndroid, or Blackberry device. It might take a few minutes to get used to the app itself, but it is ultimately pretty intuitive. For more information, on the app itself, please refer to the City of Minneapolis' website.

If you don't have a smartphone, or feel uncomfortable with the app, you can either use any of the city's online services (from your computer) to report issues, or simply call 311.

If you call 311, make sure you are within the city limits. Staff is available weekdays 7 am to 7 pm, and weekends 8 am to 4:30 pm.

Hennepin Count Ordinance #16 establishes curfew hours for juveniles. It also requires business places to abide by curfew ordinancees and to report violations.

Minneapolis households over the income limit can still have a visit for $70, which includes a consultation, materials, and labor. To schedule a visit, call (612) 335-5874 or schedule online.

For a limited time, the City is also offering no-interest financing to participants who make insulation and air sealing upgrades recommended by the Home Energy Squad. For more information about no-interest financing, call (612) 335-5884.
