We are a Christ-following community that brings ourselves and
others closer to God.
Advent has begun! Advent is a time to WAIT for the coming of the Lord. Have you been looking forward to that? Have you been looking forward to waiting? That sounds strange, but Advent is a wonderful season in the Christian year that encourages us to wait--something we don't like to do. I have a couple of suggestions for good Advent devotionals. Find them here.
We had quite an eclectic group for
Casa Maria last Saturday! Adults, college students, and high schoolers all worked together on Thanksgiving weekend to show their gratitude for God's goodness by serving others!
CATALINA YOUNG ADULTS: This Sunday, we will NOT have our regular first Sunday of the month lunch. We have been asked to help with Angel Tree gift wrapping, so we will meet with the youth group from 5-7pm Sunday night.
Mark your calendars for THE SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS! This is usually a pretty dead time around churches. Christmas Eve was amazing, people are travelling, and the Sunday after Christmas usually gets overlooked. This year, we are hosting a wonderful community event!  We will be packing 40,000 meals to feed hungry people right here in Tucson!
We will be partnering with friends from the Tucson Muslim community and possibly also with friends from Temple Emmanu-El for a truly interfaith experience! Don't miss this truly unique experience of working together with our neighbors to feed hungry people! Contact Pastor Paul for more information!  We are currently working on a page on the church website with complete info. The supplies needed do cost roughly 25 cents per meal, so donations are welcome!
A GREAT WAY TO SERVE JESUS AND CATALINA!  Jesus said “let the little children come to me”…and they’re here! Our church nursery is full of babies and toddlers to love and nurture! YOU can volunteer to care for these precious little ones. Contact Kristin to sign up for a special hands-on training December 13 at noon in the nursery. You’ll learn all about the church nursery and the special way we care for babies and toddlers, and get a few slobbery kisses as a thank you. Kristin@catalinamethodist.org

Don't miss the sanctuary choir Christmas concert! Sunday, December 20, 4:30pm!  Invite a friend!

DAY SCHOOL CALENDARS ON SALE!

As a fundraiser, our day school is selling calendars containing original art work by our students! The calendars cost $10 and will be available December 6 and 13 after ALL worship services!

Walk to the Manger will be part of our worship on December 13!  This is a Catalina tradition! A Catalina family with a small child portrays the Holy Family, and we walk down in worship to greet them. We are encouraged to bring gifts! Our gifts will benefit Aviva Family Services, who work with children entering foster care. Suggested gifts are new socks and underwear for children, and also winter hats and gloves.

Online Giving

Did you know that giving to support God's work through Catalina UMC is as simple as clicking here? It is!

Thank You Catalina!

Your kind donations to the Blenman fund have made possible complete Thanksgiving meals for five families. These consist of 12 pound frozen turkeys, frozen apple and pumpkin pies and all the trimmings in between. Your continued donations will help to fulfill Christmas wish lists for five different families. With Blenman’s free and reduced lunch status at 90%, it’s difficult to pare down the number of families that can be helped. The 800lbs of the tuna, beans and other canned goods donated over the summer have filled Blenman’s Pantry. 600 lbs have been distributed on an as needed basis and we hope the remaining 200lbs will last through the holidays. The Blenman Student Council is pitching in by beginning a food drive to help keep the Pantry stocked.
Currently, we are collecting instant oatmeal and granola bars for Blenman. Bring your contributions to church with you!

Scars and Straw is the name of the series of Advent videos being shown in The Refuge on Sunday mornings. The concept is the prophet Isaiah giving his message in a contemporary urban setting, along with a compelling re-telling of the Christmas story. You can preview the videos (or watch them again) here.

By the way, church news and church event photos are always welcome!
Send submissions to richard@catalinamethodist.org by Tuesday noon. We intentionally keep this email brief (so we cannot include everything) and we intentionally keep it about Catalina (so, please, no requests to announce outside events). If you are submitting a photo, send it to richard.lee.jones@gmail.com (Gmail works better with large attachments like photos).
Here are some great photos of Catalina folks in action! On the left, our Primavera cook team prepares salad! On the right, Neil West coaches some of our youngest servers on the art of the PB&J! And on the bottom, Molly is in charge of quality control at Sandwich Making!

Part of being a good Sunday School teacher is listening! This photo is Caitlin McCurry leading one of our classes. YOU could help with Sunday School, too!
Four candles in a circle with a big one in the middle? Yep, take a moment and learn the basics about the advent wreath. Chuck introduces you to what those candles symbolize. Watch here.
