Farm Spotlight

Romagnoli Tree Farm

Romagnoli Tree Farm is located on Oneida Valley Rd in Canastota. This farm began in 1994 when Dewey, the owner, planted his first set of trees. By 2001, he was open for business as a u-cut and pre-cut tree business!

Romagnoli’s grow five varieties of trees for u-cut and has eight available for pre-cut. At about 1000 new trees planted each year, they are managing their land well and intend to continue planting 1000-1500 new trees a year.  Each tree takes approximately seven to ten years to get to the size most people look for in the perfect Christmas tree.  Speaking of perfect Christmas trees…Romagnoli’s does an outstanding job at making sure those who need one are taken care of.  This farm has participated in the Trees For Troops program for nine years now. For the 2015 donation campaign, 154 trees left Romagnoli's Tree Farm to be shipped via Fed Ex to Fort Gordon, a military base in Georgia. These trees were given to the families of those actively deployed.  This program isn’t only found at Romagnoli’s, it's nationwide.  For 2015 over 18,000 trees were donated by farms and private individuals and civic organizations throughout New York State.  If you’re interested in Trees for Troops, or if you would like to sponsor a donation next year, be sure to visit Romagnoli’s to help raise the spirit of a military family for the holidays!

Romagnoli’s small family based staff and fun interactive tree experience makes them a great family tradition. Visit Romagnoli’s between Black Friday and Christmas for your lovely, new tree. Ride on the wagon to find your tree, then warm up in their barn for some complimentary hot chocolate, coloring books, and use their special mailbox to drop your letter for Santa! Don’t forget to grab your reindeer dust on the way out, it is sure to keep those reindeers' attention and assure delivery at your house this year!

Search for farms in your neighborhood or by species across the region. Visit meatsuite.com to find out more about the farms near you!

Northeast Beginning Farmer Project

Cornell Small Farms Program

While knowledge of how to grow a particular crop is critical to small farm success, equally important are the business planning and decision making skills to make the numbers work. This is why, in addition to a number of courses specific to a farm enterprise, the Cornell Small Farms Program offers a wide array of business planning courses available through its Northeast Beginning Farmer Project.
