“He puzzled and puzzed till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. Maybe Christmas, he thought... doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps... means a little bit more!”
 Unlike the Grinch, humans and Whos are taught this lesson at a young age. Christmas and the Holiday Season are more about what you give than what you receive. The same can be said for broadcasters. All year, but particularly around the holidays, stations throughout Massachusetts give back to their communities. Telethons, food drives, clothing drives, toy drives and other fundraising events are critical programs that help in your listening or viewing area.
The MBA along with the National Association of Broadcasters want to make sure that those in Washington realize the real world impact that your stations make each and every day. | Sound Bites 2015 a resonding success |
Last month the MBA held its fourth annual Sound Bites event at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel and Conference Center. This year’s annual meeting and mingling event featured dueling sales seminars, a keynote address from Greater Media Chairman and CEO Peter Smyth, music from Country Music Association award winning singer-songwriter Lori McKenna and the MBA Broadcasting Awards.

| Broadcasters get streaming royalty break in 2016 |

In a decision long awaited by webcasters, the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) has released itsnew webcasting royalty rates. These royalties are paid by non-interactive streaming services on which listeners cannot choose the specific songs they listen to, such as Pandora and radio stations that stream their programming. The royalties are paid to SoundExchange, a performing rights organization which collects the payments on behalf of record labels and other holders of copyrights in sound recordings.
For commercial radio stations, the 17 cent rate is a substantial decrease from the 25 cent streaming rate currently paid. The new rates will become effective on January 1, 2016 and will remain in effect until December 31, 2020.

| New tower lighting rules from the FAA |
A Federal Aviation Administration Advisory Circular was released earlier this month that will affect marking and lighting obstructions, which includes broadcast towers.
The changes go into effect immediately, save for new guidelines on structures exceeding 151 ft. through 350ft which will become regulation on September 15, 2016.

Each year the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association files comments on numerous Federal Communications Commission proceedings on behalf of our members.
