NDIS rollout in Tasmania

The Commonwealth and Tasmanian governments have reached agreement on details of the full roll out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Tasmania.

Transition will begin in July 2016 and run until July 2019, eventually covering more than 10,500 Tasmanians with disability.

Tasmania’s experience with the NDIS trial for young people aged 15-24 years offers a successful base to launch the full roll-out.

The transition will roll out state-wide by age group, starting with 12–14 year olds from July 2016.

The next group to enter the NDIS will be 25–28 year olds (from January 2017), children aged 4–11 (from July 2017), 29–34 year olds (from January 2018), children aged 0–3 and 35–49 year olds (from July 2018), and then 50–64 year olds (from January 2019).

Today’s announcement gives disability service providers the opportunity to begin planning for the transition to a competitive open market and to secure a stable workforce.

The announcement does not have an immediate impact on current transition arrangements for service providers. Existing funding arrangements with the Department of Social Services continue to apply.

As we continue with transition, the Department of Social Services will communicate specific information regarding your local area and your role in the roll out.
