February is Heart Health Month!
Here are a few ways to keep your heart healthy and beating strong!

1. Eat healthy
  • You don't need to be a chef to create heart-healthy meals. Cook with fresh ingredients like fruits and vegetables and try to avoid processed foods which typically contain hidden fats and calories that you don't need. While at the grocery store try to shop from the perimeter where the fresh ingredients typically are!
2. Get plenty of physical activity
  • It may seem like a struggle to get physical activity into your day, but a little goes a long way! Aim for 30 minutes a day, most days a week. The 30 minutes can even be broken up during the day - 10 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes at lunch and 10 minutes in the evening. Do anything that gets your heart rate up...have fun with exercise! Try new activities.
3. Manage your stress levels
  • Stress affects us physically (tense, sore muscles perhaps) and emotionally (feeling helpless or depressed). Fight stress with healthy habits such as: Talking with family and friends; Embrace the things you can change; Remember to laugh; Slow down; Get enough sleep; Try not to worry about the small things; Get organized; and Practice giving back.
  • All of these items will help you combat the harmful effects of stress!

Strawberry Yogurt Parfait
This is a perfect, heart healthy dessert to serve with Valentine's Day dinner. Substitute with any fruit of your choice.

INGREDIENTS:
3 pints strawberries
2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
1 teaspoon lemon zest, divided
1 cup heavy whipping cream
3 tablespoons powdered sugar
1 cup plain low-fat Greek style yogurt

PREPARATION:
1. Slice tops off 3 pints of strawberries and cut lengthwise into wedges. Toss with brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest in a medium bowl. Let sit at room temperature until juicy, about 20 minutes, or chill for 2 hours.

2. Meanwhile, whisk cream and powdered sugar in a bowl until stiff peaks form. Fold in remaining 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest and the yogurt. Cover and chill until used, up to 2 hours.

3. Divide half of the strawberry mixture among 6 parfait glasses. Top with half of cream mixture, divided equally. Repeat layering and garnish with strawberry halves, or your choice of topping - from granola to a few dark chocolate pieces!
