President's Message
Another year is almost over. Thursday, Dec 10, is our last meeting for 2015. Don’t miss it. It will be HUGE! There will be lots of good food that the members will bring, a great demo by one of our own gifted artists, exciting mini-show, exchange of gifts worth up to $10 — and best of all — the chance to schmooze with a great bunch of interesting artists.
Sadly one of our former GAA members Ronald Clark passed away recently. His son has donated art books to the club which will be for sale at our December 10th meeting. Proceeds go to our scholarship fund.
Our Fall Salon Small Works exhibition will open tonight, December 6th, in the DIGGS gallery from 4 - 7pm. Several of our GAA members have had shows there and all have been satisfied with the very professional hanging and lighting arrangements and the ambiance of the space during receptions. We have hung about 65 works in smaller sizes — none more than 14" by 17”. It promises to be an enjoyable evening. An added benefit of exhibiting at DIGGS is being right in the heart of a lively restaurant district for those who want to grab a bite after the reception. This show will run through January 30th. A ton of hard work went into producing the Fall Salon. We all owe a big debt of gratitude to the following GAA teammates who made it happen: Araks Johannes, Amanda Sargenti, Helena Bowman, Dick Heimbold, Diane Carter, Vicky Rees, Paul Chamberlain, Shree Hingnikar, John Schiavone, and Honor Haase.
BTW our past President, Jennifer Bentson, is recuperating nicely from her back operation. Way to go Jennifer!

The Broad Museum Jaunt

In November a small group of the GAA went to the newly opened Broad Museum in downtown Los Angeles, located just beside Disney Concert Hall. The Broad has an eye-stopping façade of honeycombed concrete enveloping the building. It gives the inside of the building a very pleasant ambient light. As for the collection — it has a wide variety. A couple of the more interesting exhibits were a large scale table with chairs, titled “Under the Table” by Robert Therrien, which visitors could walk around and under. Chris Burden's warship named “Bateau de Guerre” was also intriguing.
Araks Johannes commented, “One thing I like about the contemporary art is contemplating the thought process of the artist that creates the work, so that when you see the art piece, you ask yourself, 'How did he/she come up with this idea?' It is unique, provocative, confrontational, challenging, and sometimes even offensive!”
Dick Heimbold observed, “The GAA gang had their favorites as they explored the works of leading international artists of recent decades. Whole rooms were devoted to the some of the greats — Warhol, Lichtenstein, Beuys, Close and Hirst, just to name a few. As usual, with our independent minded creative types, there were strong likes and dislikes... and lots of lively discussion. Not all of us were as enthusiastic about Damien Hirst’s sheep in a tank of formaldehyde, despite the fact that Hirst is one of the wealthiest artist in the world. Chuck Close’s giant self portrait was much admired, as was Lichtenstein’s clever painting and easel installation.”
“One room was dedicated to the Japanese pop artist, Takashi Murakami.", stated Vivianne Bowman. "I enjoyed the huge wall mural best, “In the Land of the Dead Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow” and an installation of a fairy ring with a mouse titled, 'Strange Forest'."
The museum is a nice add-on to Los Angeles' numerous art venues... well worth a visit!

November Meeting With Johnathon Gallagher
At the November meeting, multi-media artist Johnathon Gallagher joined us for a very interesting and engaging demonstration on collage and multi-media. Johnathon donated several artworks, which were raffled off after his demonstration to help with our scholarship fund. Thank you to all who purchase tickets, to our demonstrator and congratulations to the raffle winners.

Member Updates
Araks Johannes has one piece at Pasadena Society of Artist's 90th Annual exhibition which is being held at Whites Fine Art Restoration and Gallery. The show runs through December 30th.
Araks has also been accepted to a group show of Los Angeles Art Association members at Lamperouge Gallery at the Brewery.
