Family Day Weekend Community Skating Party!

Syrina Refugee Assistance

Several community members are looking for help to sponsor Syrian refugees, either financially, through in-kind donations, or your time and talents (including organizing potential fundraisers, assisting with planning and arrival, or long term assistance).  Please contact caleigh.rabbitte@gmail.com if you are interested in knowing more and getting involve!

Parents of 3-5 year olds!

The Winston Heights Mountview Community Association is bringing back Ice Tots this season!

Ice Tots is a learn to skate program for 3-5 year olds taught in a group format. Each child must be accompanied on the ice by an adult. (The adult should wear skates or non-slip footwear on the ice.)

Brittany Jones, a very qualified skating instructor with coaching and first aid certification will teach our program, which will consist of 8 weekly 45 minute classes starting January 9 at the community rink. We will hold one series of classes at 10:00 a.m. and another at 11:00 a.m. We can take up to 10 adult/child pairs in each.

Because the  Community Association will again underwrite the costs of the program, we can offer it free of charge to  Community Association members and for a nominal cost of $20.00 for non-members. Similar indoor programs cost around $60.00 / child.

Preregistration is required and children must have skates and a CSA helmet. If you and your child wish to participate, please e-mail lasharp@telus.net to receive the registration form.

We have been looking for you!

The Winston Heights-Mountview Board of Directors is looking for new Board members! This is a great way to get involved as a community leader and bring your ideas to the table. The current Board is a dynamic (and fun!) group that is a mix of established residents and those newer to the community. Meetings are held at Winston Heights-Mountview Community Centre Board Room on the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. For more information, please contact Christine at president@winstonheights.ca.

During the 2014-2015 season we had a great event every Tuesday evening 'Community Skate Night'.  We would love to continue this event to through 2015-2016 season but to do so we will need your help!

We are looking for a couple of volunteers to come for the evening and help out. You can count on us to provide the 'training' to get the season started for you.

Please contact Dave:
rinks@winstonheights.ca
Traffic Calming

The City of Calgary advises that the focus of their 2016  traffic calming initiative in the community will be on 27th Avenue NE between Edmonton Trail and 6th Street N.E. because of speeding in the playground zone by the playground and community hall.  Locally affected residents on 27 Avenue NE can expect to receive a traffic opinion survey in the New Year soliciting feedback on some proposed traffic calming measures.

Book Club

This easygoing group meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 7-9 pm at the Winston Heights-Mountview Community Centre Board Room. Bring a beverage of choice to enjoy with snacks provided by that month’s moderator. Escape your day-to-day with a great book and some lively banter! To join our group or for information on upcoming books, please e-mail Kendra at bookclub@winstonheights.ca. Do you have a book you'd like to suggest? Come out to book club and bring along your suggestions. We may decide as a group to read them in an upcoming month!

JANUARY
On Tuesday, Jan. 19 our book club will be discussing All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.

Playgroup!

Are you a mom, dad, grandparent or caregiver in the neighbourhood and would like to have a place to go to meet other people and have your children socialize and play with others? Then come and join us at the Winston Heights-Mountview Playgroup held at the Winston Heights-Mountview Community Centre. We have great toys for the kids to play with and this is a great way to get out and meet others. Playgroup is held each Monday morning starting at 10:00 a.m. and lasts to 11:30 a.m (starting up again September 14, 2015). This is an informal, non-registered playgroup, so no need to sign up, just come out and join us on Monday mornings - we love to meet new families in the neighbourhood! If you have any questions, or would like more information, please contact Sarah Wiedmer Jarabak at playgroup@winstonheights.ca. Also, if you'd be interested in having a 'story time' during playgroup, please contact me via e-mail. If we have enough interest, I will organize a Calgary Public Library public outreach coordinator to schedule us in for regular story times. They bring books on a specific theme and read a few to the children while guardians quietly visit. The books are even available to be checked out if you bring your library card with you.
POTLUCK!
