January 8th, 2016: New Opportunities in the New Year

Happy 2016 to all of of our friends, families and partners. Sunrise is off to a great start this year-  we were accepted into the PECO Energizing Education Program (PEEP), which will provide additional STEAM programming for middle schoolers, as well as the 21st Century Learning Center Cohort 8, which will expand our afterschool services to Francis Scott Key School and John Bartram High School.

The PA State Budget crisis has continued despite a growing demand for afterschool programs throughout Philadelphia and the state at large. Sunrise remains committed to continuing and expanding necessary programming despite this continued setback.

A sincere thank you to those of you who made contributions to Sunrise this holiday season.
Before the Winter Break, Sunrise students from South Philadelphia High School put on their elf hats and delivered presents to all Sunrise K-8 students at Southwark. Gifts were generously collected and donated by Toys for Tots.

It's a Fact: Lower Income Families Have Less Access to Extracurricular Activities - Afterschool Can Help Close This Gap!
Regardless of education, income, ethnicity, or family structure, parents are the number one advocate for their own child’s well-being. Still, these factors cause large variations in the specific outlook, worries, and aspirations parents have for their children. The Pew Research Center surveyed 1,807 parents of children under 18 to evaluate the influence of these factors on parenting across a range of issues, from parenting approaches and concerns to childcare and education. Their findings, outlined in the recently released Parenting in America: Outlook, worries, aspirations are strongly linked to financial situation reportindicate the largest driver for parenting divides is not related to parenting philosophies, which dominates contemporary debates, but to financial stability.
