December 2015

With the end of the year fast approaching and just under half of the sailing season completed we have been fortunate not to lose any weekends to foul weather.

Along with the regular sailing program, our small and dedicated group of rescue and race management volunteers have been involved with the Lipton Cup Regatta, assisted the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria in delivering an International Regatta (Para Worlds), and supported RYCV with racing activities in the Sailing World Cup.

During the 2015 Para World Sailing Championships, WSC members assisted in the delivery of 11 races over six days for 48 competitors in the 2.4mR boats on Alpha course. Alpha team was lead by International Race Officer Ross Wilson from Black Rock Yacht Club. The event was described by many competitors as one of the best they’ve been to.

As our involvement and commitment to on-water activities such as TACKERS continues to grow so to do our social and fishing programs. This season our ‘themed’ first Friday of the month, and regular activities such as the annual Christmas party, have been very well patronised. So much so, that tickets for this years Christmas party have sold out!

In the new year stay tuned for another fishing completion in late Feb or early March.

In closing and on behalf of the Committee of Management I’d like to wish all a very merry Christmas and a happy and safe new year.

Discover Sailing Day – 10 Jan 2016: boats and volunteers needed

The planning for our Discover Sailing Day  on Sunday 10 Jan 2016 has begun.

Discover Sailing Day is a great a day to allow non-sailors to come and try sailing. It’s an important day to promote our club and attract new members. This is a wonderful chance to bring down your own family and friends to enjoy our club facilities and get out in a sailing boat with an experienced sailor, or even a RIB to see what life is like on the water.

Make sure you tell your family and friends to come down to the club from 10am – 3pm on Sunday 10 January to have a sail.

To make the day a success we need as many club members to assist as possible. We will need members who own trailables to bring their boats and share the experience of sailing with others. We will also need some people to take out guests in club Pacers and other OTB boats.

Peter Behrendt will be the coordinator, so if you can lend a hand in any way please either send an email to secretary@williamstownsailingclub.org.au or call Peter on 0410 403 578.

Social calendar - upcoming events

Xmas party - booked out!! So great to see we will have 100 people at the club this Saturday(19 Dec) for the Xmas party. Helpers are needed Friday night from 6pm to set up and decorate the hall.

New Year’s Eve at the club: The club will be open on New Year’s Eve with the bar operating from 6pm for club members, family and friends to enjoy the great view of the fireworks from the upper deck. No alcohol can be brought onto the premises as the bar will be operating. The kitchen and BBQ are available for members to prepare meals etc. - just make sure you clean up. There will be no organised catering or live music on the night. Please be aware that car parking will be at a premium, so you're advised to get in early, walk or even come by pushbike. We aren't sure if the council are closing road again this year, like they did last year.

Friday nights at the club: On Friday 4 December we had about 70 people at the club, enjoying the lovely sounds of The Angelicats, the beautiful weather and the yummy Mexican food. Thanks to all those who help at these events. Such events provide another way for people to enjoy the club, and spend time with family and friends. The growing success of the Friday night events is a great reflection of our positive community spirit that is evident around the club. The next Friday night session will be on Friday 5 February. The music will be jazz/blues from two locals Melissa and Maurice - so put the date in your diary.

Family fun day: On Sunday 14 Feb we'll be having a family fun day at the club from 10am to 2pm. There will be some organised activities including a bush band and some bush dancing, maybe even a paddle in some of the canoes, the Optis will be in the water, maybe fishing and swimming off the pier and use of table tennis, fooz ball etc. We will have a BBQ running where you can buy lunch. The idea is to encourage any members to bring their kids or grand-kids down to make use of the club and our facilities. We are conscious that most of our social activities are generally not child friendly, so hopeful this day will provide a more family focus for some social interaction. We are certainly not limiting activities to just families, so you do not need to have kids to come along and join in, so don’t be shy!

See the website for more information.

Upstairs kitchen

Members are welcome to use the upstairs kitchen, as long as they leave it clean and tidy. We have just installed a new dishwasher - but if you use it, please make sure you empty it (and not leave it full for the next person). Any utensils, cooking equipment etc. in the upstairs kitchen belongs to the club. Regrettably some of it has been disappearing lately. Please be considerate and don't take home club property.

Canteen helpers needed

We always looking for a few extra people to help with canteen duty on Saturday mornings from about 10.30am till 1.30pm. We have a small number of regulars and they would always love an extra helper or two to share the load. Helping in the canteen is a great way to get to know people around the club.  If you would be available to help us in the canteen, even if it's just once over the summer, please call Lois on 0412341223.

Comments from WSC volunteers in the 2015 Para World Titles

Stephen Meddings

"Definitely a learning curve but an enjoyable two days on the water"...

Les Kiss

"The management and execution of the races was excellent, and the only problem I noted was an over-enthusiastic rescue boat crew shouting out that the sailing course was ‘a restricted area’ and you must leave immediately"....

Bruce Mansfield

"From a sailing perspective the disciplines to implement the program were impressive. The emphasis given to course accuracy, timings, safety and fleet management was commendable"....

Stubby holders

Last minute Xmas presents

Don’t forget that the club has some great merchandise that can help with those last few Xmas gift ideas: stubby holders, hats, t-shirts, rugby tops and fleece jackets. These might seem odd when it is 39 this week, but we are in Melbourne, and we can get four seasons in one day. Buy these items from the canteen on Saturdays. If you can’t get there on a Saturday, send a request to secretary@williamstownsailingclub.org.au and we will try and sort out something for you.

See the website for the full range of merchandise and prices.

cars and trailers

Reminder - parking etiquette

  • The club has a grassed parking area between the toilet block and boat ramp, where trailers can be parked after unhitching from cars. Reminder: no cars can be parked on or near the grassed area.
  • All day parking is available along the Strand. Please park on the Yarra river side of The Strand if you have a trailer. We have a commitment to local residents to not parking on the west side of The Strand with trailers.
fishing comp

Help needed for a WSC fishing comp in the new year

WSC is hoping to arrange another fishing competition for club members only in the new year (late Jan to early Feb). James d’ Aquino is looking for helpers within the fishing members to help out with organising and ideas to run it. Any club members interested in helping or wanting more details should contact James D’Aquino on 0410597550 by the end of November.

TACKERS out sailing

TACKERS sailing programs

Saturday mornings

Congratulations to Grace and her team for our great Saturday morning Tackers sessions. It is wonderful to see our own club members and visitors coming down to the Club and having a go at sailing. The Optis look so colourful, and fun on the water. An adult member was spotted in one last week with his son, so they are flexible little boats. This program is leading people to then book in for our formal Tackers courses in January.

TACKERS first course

Our first formal tackers training program run by Grace and her team will be on this coming week - Monday to Thursday from 9.30am to 3pm. If you are around the club, pop your head in to say hi to Grace and her troops, and make it a positive experience for all.  Check if they need some help along the way. There will be a graduation BBQ on the Thursday from about 1pm, so if anyone can help Lois with that, please call her on 0412 341 223.

Racing rules

In our second installment unpacking the rules of boating we’re going to cover the four basic rules of sailing racing. These four rules cover about 99% of situations on the water but probably only about 10% of the situations that cause dispute. And… we’ll leave the rules for mark rounding for another time.

The four basic rules of racing are:

  1. Boats on a port tack (the boom is on the starboard side) shall keep clear of boats on starboard tack (Rule 10).
  2. When boats are on the same tack and overlap each other, the boat to windward (the boat closest to the wind) shall keep clear of a leeward boat (Rule 11).
  3. When boats are on the same tack and are not overlapped, the boat that is astern shall keep clear of the boat ahead. (Rule 12).
  4. When a boat is tacking (changing tack) it shall keep clear of boats that are not tacking (Rule 13).
