One of my favorite holiday pastimes is curling up and watching "A Christmas Carol," by Charles Dickens. For me, there's no better way of being reminded about the true meaning of Christmas (add "It's a Wonderful Life" to that short list as well). So, here's our little tribute to this Christmas classic, along with some fast fun facts!
- Charles Dickens' pen name was Boz.
- The famous plum pudding that Mrs. Cratchit made was not made of plums, but raisins.
- Ebenezer Scrooge's famous catch phrase, "Bah Humbug," was only said twice by him in the book.
- "A Christmas Carol" was written by hand in 1843, which means a typesetter would have had to make out Dickens' crossings out and spelling mistakes before making the actual books.
- In order to get his charitable message across to Londoners, Dickens was originally only going to write a pamphlet about giving to the poor. But, after more thought, he wrote "A Christmas Carol" in only 6 weeks (saving his literary career)!
- Scrooge's sister, Fanny, was modeled after Dickens' real-life sister, Fanny, whom he adored. Fanny had a severely handicapped son, Henry Burnett Jr., who Dickens placed at the center of his tale as Tiny Tim.
- There have been more than 20 film versions of "A Christmas Carol," including versions starring The Muppets, Barbie, Mickey Mouse and Mr. Magoo.
