President’s end of year message

By Terry Polglase, retiring Branch President.

As the year concludes, we are in the process of finalising the Log of Claims for the Teaching Service Agreement and it will be formally lodged this year.

Congratulations to all of those DoE members (Teachers, Principals, School Psychologists etc.) who responded to the survey. The survey participation rate was very high at 50% which means the results are statistically extremely robust and the margin of error is insignificant at less than +/- 1.5%.

We can now look forward to advocating and negotiating, on your behalf, with the confidence that we accurately reflect your views and priorities on key issues. Negotiations are expected to start with the DoE in February.

In addition to negotiations for a new Teaching Service Agreement, 2016 is shaping up to be a big year for Gonski with a Federal Election. In welcome news, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said he supported needs-based funding and the findings of the Gonski Review in an ABC radio interview during his recent Tasmanian visit.

I urge all of you next year to increase your involvement and activism. Reps are needed in every workplace and shared joint roles are welcomed. It halves the load but doubles the support. There will also be calls to fill several vacancies on Council early in 2016 and every member should at some stage in their career nominate to serve as a councillor. It is through this body where your issues are made known, where discussion occurs, where policy and decisions are made and where you can bring voice to employer-employee concerns.

I leave the AEU in good hands and I am confident that the organization will continue to support you with your personal, professional and industrial needs in the professional manner that you would expect.

Having served the maximum continuous period possible of four years as AEU president, my term has completed, and I sincerely thank members and AEU staff for the personal support I have received. It has been an absolute privilege and honour to have led the one organization that is able to speak on the value and importance of public education and to raise your concerns with the employer, and when needed, the minister.

With this now said, enjoy your well-earned break, re-charge and return next year with the energy and enthusiasm that we well know is needed in educating our next generation of Tasmanians.

In unity,
Terry
