WINTER NOTES from Guest Editor and Azule Board Member Lorrie Jayne

"Azule, in December, is especially suited to welcome winter’s stark and brilliant dance of darkness and light. December brings the longest night, when Bluff’s midnight skies, dark as indigo velvet, chambers the still silence within, the womb from which birth springs. Earth turns slowly back towards sun,  artists/community stoke the woodstove, gather round the kitchen and table for warmth, companionship, creation, and activism. Camille’s growing mosaic glitters in the winter light. Residents read, write, draw, or gaze out broad windows at the deer and turkey scratching at winter’s feast in the dry grass. Dawn glow streams through stained glass, transforming the natural light of the sun and renewing our spirits. Lux, Lumens, Illumination.

The Pot Luck is the firsts of Azule's MONTHLY COMMUNITY POTLUCK SERIES, initiated by fabulous new staff members Natalie Marsh and Matt Wallace

"We invite the Madison County community to come out, make new connections, strengthen old connections, and party with Azule! Bring a homemade sweet dessert or supper dish, and any art, poetry, music, or story you wish to share. We are suggesting a donation of $16, but most importantly we want to have a sweet community gathering at Azule! No RSVP required."

BEHIND THE SCENE AT AZULE

Welcome New Azule Board  Member 
Gina Zachary Doan

"I grew up in Enka, NC and raised my family in Canton NC and have lived in Spring Creek since August 2014. I am excited to be part of the Azule Board and working with the wonderful folks of Azule and in this community.

     My son Zach is a talented guitarist and currently plays lead guitar for the Joe Lasher Jr Band. My daughter Morgan is a Senior and UNC Chapel Hill with a double major in Mathematical Decision Science and Peace, War & Defense. She enjoys singing and playing guitar. Riley, my youngest,  is a Junior at Pisgah High school. A lover of the outdoors he is also a drummer. I have been married to Barry Doan for 10 years. He was born in Yancey County and was raised and went to school in Madison. He and I have our own business doing drywall, painting and small remodeling jobs. 

 

I enjoy spending time with my family, music, hiking, horses and designing websites.  I also work part time for Hope for Horses, a non-profit equine rescue in Leicester, NC where I design and maintain their website and social media sites. I also write grants and do their accounting."

Di Jayawickrema:

was a December’s Resident Artist

Azule was privileged to host Sri Lankan writer Di Jayawickrema for a week long residency this November. Informed by her eclectic background, her fiction deals with loss, memory, and fragile connections across time and place. At the end of her residency at Azule we held a community potluck and where Di shared some of her writings with us.
