Welcome back to another year of fantastic events, exhibitions and workshops from Collage Arts
Welcome back to another year of fantastic events, exhibitions and workshops from Collage Arts including but not limited to a visit from Funk/Soul legend Andrew Roachford in February, surrounded by Ruma Nowaz’s dreamy, semi-abstract landscapes.  We’ll also, of course, be continuing our weekly live jazz, with performances from the likes of the great Stan Sulzmann's Neon Orchestra, and tributes to some of the true innovators of the art form.  Haringey Literature Live will be in the mix, too, kicking off with tutor Jo Tracy’s Introduction to Screenwriting course at the beginning of next month, as will Karamel Kids; bringing enormous vegetables with them!

There’ll be even more to come, so make sure to below and visit the Collage Arts and Karamel websites for more culture, entertainment and fun.

# JAZZ AT KARAMEL

Jazz at Karamel continues to go from strength to strength with a mixture of the eclectic best of the London Jazz scene. 2016 will be no different with players both young and old continuing to dazzle us every Thursday night. Among the many acts to look forward to, we’ll be bringing tributes to miles Davis and Pete Saberton, as well as the intriguing Martin Speake Project and the Triumphant return of Orquestra Mahatma.

What have been some of the highlights of the past year of Jazz at Karamel?

Stu Butterfield (drummer and Jazz at Karamel promoter)It’s been really amazing to bring Big Bands to the stage such as Pete Hurt and Gareth Lochrane’s Big Bands. Also, we’ve been really pleased to bring some more slightly exotic acts, such as Trogon’s Afro-Cuban sound, Loz Speyer’s Timezone project, and the great Orquestra Mahatma. It’s also been great to have the addition of the lovely upright piano!

What are some highlights we can expect from the next year of shows?

SBOne great gig will be Stan Sulzmann’s big band. Ultimately, if the sheer volume of musicians calling me up for slots on the bill is anything to go by, it should be another fantastic year

Henry Lowther (trumpeter and Jazz at Karamel mainstay) - My own band! (Still Waters). Actually, it’s really great to have somewhere to go locally, to see live jazz and to play, and I’m there every Thursday. I’m very glad of the opportunity; in fact I’m sure the audience must be getting sick of me! There have been some great evenings with the London Jazz Orchestra, The Great Wee Band, and the Chris Laurence Quartet, but, really, every week is a highlight.

# XANTONE BLACQ PRESENTS...

Musician and Promoter Xantoné Blacq is working in partnership with Collage Arts and the award-winning venue, Karamel, to bring world renowned musicians to North London.

The Xantoné Blacq Presents: An Evening With… events are unique in that they focus on increasing the connection between the artists performing and the audience via the band performance and importantly, the artist Q&A.  The Q&A section is an audience favourite and allows the fans, long time supporters and general public to directly ask the artist and their band members, any question that pops into their mind and/or is of interest to them. An adventurous, potentially explosive and always entertaining part of the evening.

The Xantoné Blacq Presents: An Evening With… series featured Jason Rebello in December and continues in 2016 on Wednesday February 10th with Soul Funk music master Andrew Roachford.

Wednesday 10th February at 8pm (doors open 7pm) Tickets £10
Available from 12th January via
Eventbrite

Interview with Jason Rebello
You did a Q&A session with the audience at Karamel. Could you give us a little snippet of the kind of things you were talking about? For example, could you tell us one of your favourite artists to work with?

JR: When I was younger, I got the chance to work with (multiple Grammy winning saxophonist and composer) Wayne Shorter. I actually toured Japan with him, which was my first time there, so that was amazing.

Could you tell us a little about the Jazz Rainbow project and your work in education?

JR: It was an album of kids’ tunes or tunes that kids would recognise, like Thunderbirds and Spiderman, recorded with a professional Jazz band. Jazz for youngsters.

I still do a lot of lectures and workshops; I love teaching.

Improvisation seems like an important part of what you do. Do you think that it’s something that anyone can learn, or do some people just have that ability?

JR: Everyone can learn to improvise, we improvise all the time. Even having a conversation is improvising. Some people do find it easier to be open, and some people find it quite frightening, but anyone can learn.

You’ve worked with so many artists from Jeff Beck to Omar, and that’s just a small selection. Do you feel you have to change your style to fit each one?

JR: I always try my best to adapt. Sometimes you do clash, but you just have to work out a balance between you. There are times as well where you might disagree and not be able to say anything and just have to swallow it, which is a good learning exercise. At the end of the day, if someone invites you to be in their band or on their album, you’re there to work with them.

Is there anyone left you’d still like to work with?

JR: Yeah, loads. Stevie Wonder….

... Miles Davis. Louis Armstrong… the band volunteers, with a laugh.

# KARAMEL KIDS
FARMER WHO’S ENORMOUS TURNIP & THE THREE LITTLE PIGS
Saturday 30th January at 11am, FREE ENTRY

Farmer Who’s in trouble. Because he never went to school, he’s forever mistaking his horse for his cow, his pigs for his sheep and his carrots for his potatoes.

Then he has a brainy-wave. He’ll get some really clever children to teach him! Soon, everyone’s mooing and baaing, digging and sowing, pulling and tugging, and reliving the many wonderful adventures that he and his animals have down on the farm.

# Ruma Nowaz solo exhibition
Working mostly in oils and watercolours, over the course of her career as a painter, Ruma Nowaz has built up a stunning collection of the evocative abstracts and misty, nostalgic landscapes that have become her signature style, presented here for her first solo exhibition at Karamel.

Exhibition runs from 23 January 'til 11th March 2016
# Haringey Literature Live

INTRODUCTION TO SCREEN WRITING

(Weds) Feb 3, 10, (half term), 24, March 2, 9, 16
10.30am-1pm, £90
Workshop practitioner: Jo Tracy

Whether you’re totally new to script writing, or looking to knock an idea into shape, this introductory course offers the essential building blocks to help you create compelling stories for the screen. Over 6 weeks, through a mixture of seminars and practical exercises, the course will cover: the patterns all stories fall into instinctively; screenplay structure; character as story; the use of dialogue; TV vs Cinema; and the writing of log-lines. The aim is for all students to finish the course with a clear, strong road map for the writing or rewriting of their great concept as a script for the screen.

SHORT FICTION IN FOCUS

(Thurs) Feb 4, 11, (half term), 25, March 3, 10, 17
10.30am-1pm, £90
Workshop practitioner: Giovanna Iozzi

Short stories offer writers an exciting space to experiment with ideas and to try out different voices. If crafted with skill, short fiction contains all the power and resonance of the best novels. In these workshops we will be decoding extracts from brilliant published stories (from Kate Mansfield to Kevin Barry) as well as learning to shape and develop our own stories, focusing on stylistic approaches to: voice, characterization, story structure/plot, setting and point of view. Students will leave the course having tried out different forms of short fiction: from flash fiction (as little as 50 words) to longer stories of up to 3,000 words and beyond. All levels welcome
