Ottawa area events for families and kids

Merry Christmas, everyone! There's no newsletter next week so this one will cover all the events for this week and next. Hope you have a happy holiday!

The Canada Agriculture and Food Museum starts its holiday programming on Saturday, December 26 and runs all day through to Sunday, January 3. Make ginger or candy cane cookies, do a holiday craft, and maybe even enter their family gingerbread house competition. All included with admission.
The Canada Aviation and Space Museum has holiday programming too, also starting Saturday, December 26 and running through to Sunday, January 3. There's a candy drop each day at 11:30 a.m. (for ages 4-7), crafts, and a space exploration adventure activity. Included with admission.
The Ottawa Senators have an early game, at 5 p.m., on Sunday, December 27 versus the Bruins.Tickets start at a pretty outrageous $70, but it could make for a nice Christmas gift for the guy (and kids) who have everything.

Speaking of the Sens, a more economical option is their awesome Sens Skills Competition, which is coming up on Thursday, December 31. I love this event - we have been several times and it's a ton of fun. The action begins at 10:30 a.m. when you can watch the Sens warming up; then the big action starts at 11 a.m. when the Sens divide into two teams and compete to see who can skate the fastest, shoot the hardest, and score the most goals. There's local kids from the area too who are invited to compete alongside their favourite players and lots of prizes to be won. Tickets are just $20 for 100 level seats and it's totally worth it.
The Kanata Theatre presents its annual family holiday musical - Mary Poppins - from Sunday, December 27 through Wednesday, December 30. Tickets are just $10 each and there are matinees at 2 p.m. every day, as well as a few evening shows.
Over at the NAC, The Wizard of Oz comes to town starting Tuesday, December 29 and running through to Sunday, January 3. It features all the favourite songs from the movie and has family-friendly matinees at 2 p.m. on the Saturday and Sunday. Tickets start at $39.
Looking for a New Year's Eve party that the whole family can enjoy? Rick Chiarelli is throwing his annual Alcohol-Free New Year's again this year on Thursday, December 31, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., at Ben Franklin Place on Centrepointe Drive. There's music, crafts, snacks and hot chocolate, skating on the (refrigerated) outdoor rink, buskers, bouncy castles, sleigh rides, fireworks, and more. AND, it's all free thanks to great sponsors. There's a talent show, too, that's open to the public so if you have a talented kid, sign them up.
Another family-friendly way to spend New Years Eve is at the Hogmanay at Landsdowne Park, presented by the Scottish Society. It's an evening filled with lots of Scottish music, food, and of course, whiskey inside at the Aberdeen Pavillion; meanwhile, there's a kids' zone in the Agriculture building featuring crafts, face painters, and balloon animals. If you have to head home early, there's a countdown to "midnight in Scotland" at 7 p.m.; if you can stay late, there's a second countdown at midnight that also features fireworks. And - it's all free!
The Museum of Nature is hosting its first Brunch of the year on Friday, January 1, with seatings at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. This one is a little more expensive than the others due to being on a holiday - $42.50 for adults, $22.50 for kids, $6.50 for toddlers. Reservations are required and remember that admission to the regular exhibits at the museum and all gratuities are included in the price.
