Thanks for the bike and puppy, but what comes next?

Letter to Santa shows giving is the new receiving this holiday season!

Dear Mr. Santa,

This time of year I’d imagine you are busy reading millions of letters written in crayon asking for bicycles and puppies.  This year none of those are from me.  I have my bicycle and my puppy already; those were great gifts by the way. Now what I need is a safe place to ride the bike and walk the puppy. This year instead of a brightly wrapped present, I’d like you to make a donation (those are tax deductible, by the way) to WOBO to help them continue their great work.

Walk Oakland Bike Oakland (WOBO) is committed to supporting every Oakland community’s ability to improve neighborhood vitality, livability and sustainability by making walking and bicycling safe, easy, accessible, and fun.

Celebrating its 10th year in existence in 2016, WOBO is gaining traction in our community like never before and they are taking the streets by force!  This year WOBO has hosted three major open street events with record attendance, eleven (Whoa!) Oakland Urban Paths walks, fantastic Bike To Work Day and Park(ing) Day celebrations and a handful of super fun group rides and workshops to help keep Oakland moving forward.

On the more serious side, throughout 2015 WOBO was successful in enacting safe planning and policy decisions and spurring improvements of all shapes and sizes to many Oakland streets; including Grand Ave, Webster St, Adeline St, Jackson St, Peralta St, Telegraph Ave, and 17th St.

With more safe streets I can continue to ride that bike and walk that puppy, which is now a very large dog.  My mom says, “Thanks a lot, Santa.”

Merry Holidays!
   Love, Kids of Oakland

Go ahead and donate smiles today!

Double your donation for free! Seriously! Tomorrow is Match Day! All donations received on December 16th will be doubled.  In addition, every monthly pledge through December will be matched by an anonymous donor!

Thanks for a Wonderful Winter Wonderland!

Shout out to our all-star volunteer team, sponsors, donors and most importantly, YOU!

Winter Wonderland 2015 was a smashing success, we had a great time dancing the night away with our supporters! The Starline Social Club and the West Grand Brass Band provided the perfect backdrop for our celebration of 2015 and toasts to an even better 2016!

Unable to make the party and help fund our 2016 endeavors? Dying to make a year-end donation? Don't worry, there is still time to make your tax-deductible 2015 WOBO Donation!

We will be kicking the new year off strong with an Open House (Jan 7) and a Campaign Kick-Off (Jan 20)

We are excited and optimistic as to what 2016 holds for Oakland, we hope you join us for the ride! We will be kicking off our 2016 efforts in January in style, with an open house and campaign kick-off meeting.

Thursday, January 7th, 5 to 7 PM: Come by our office for an open house, enjoy the views, meet our Board, find out where you can help in 2016 and stock up on WOBO goodies and tasty treats! We're on the corner of 14th and Broadway, on the 10th floor of the Central Historic Building at 436 14th Street, Suite 1001. There is plenty of bike parking in our building's basement and the building is located near the 12th Street City Center BART station and major bus lines.

Wednesday, January 20th, 5:30 to 7 PM: Want to be involved and/or lead a campaign in 2016? Join us on January 20th at Ale Industries (3096 E 10th St) to help shape our grand plans for the new year. In addition to signing people up for tasks, we'll go over our new neighborhood ambassador program and other ways you can be a steward for better walking and bicycling conditions. Please RSVP here if you're interested in attending.

Quote of the month:

The city of Oakland's Energy and Climate Action Plan calls for a 26% reduction of GHG emissions by 2020. "To achieve significant GHG reductions, transportation modes such as transit, walking and bicycling must increasingly become the preferred mode of moving about the City. To be effective, these modes will need to be available, accessible, safe, cost competitive and desirable in comparison to the private automobile."
