New Year & ch ch ch changes

Nga mihi o te tau hou and happy new year to you!

Since NDF introduced individual membership last year we've had an encouraging amount of interest and uptake of membership. In 2016 we're keen to increase our membership further. We hope you'll join us and if you're already a member, encourage others to - at $25 it’s a great investment. You get to vote, enjoy exclusive access to discussions and decision-making, opportunities for professional development, and you’re eligible for conference subsidies and grants and NDF treats you like an individual, not a representative of an organisation.

So, sign up for NDF membership in 2016. Also remember that NDF2016 conference will be on the 22nd and 23rd of November. If you’d like to help organise the conference or volunteer in any other way for NDF just drop us a line.

On behalf of NDF, Leith Haarhoff

We have a vacancy on the Board and within the next month there will be an election for a new member to fill the vacancy for one year. Please think about whether you’d like to join us – lots of fun and the chance to develop professional skills and networks.

Our indicative timeline is:

  • Open nominations Monday 18 January
  • Close nominations Friday 29 January
  • Open voting Monday 1 February
  • Close voting Friday 12 February
  • Announce successful candidate Monday 15 February in time for board meeting on Thursday 18 February

By way of reminder, any individual member can stand but they need to nominated by an institutional member. Voting is by individual members. The nomination form will be available on Monday 18 January on the NDF website.

#1Lib1Ref

There was a really well-attended panel session focussing on Wikipedia at NDF2015. Many of us are contributing to it, using it, and thinking about how it fits into our professional worlds.

There’s a great opportunity to get involved. Wikipedia is 15 years old this month and there’s a campaign under way, #1Lib1Ref (One Librarian, One Reference), from January 15–23, 2016.

It’s remit is simple - to make Wikipedia better by adding references to articles, especially those including “[citation needed]”. The campaign highlights a number of things:

  • Wikipedia is a collective, collaborative effort, working towards a vision of being "the sum of all human knowledge."
  • Wikipedia is a first stop for researchers.
  • Librarians are the go-to people for references

Find out more about the campaign, and how to contribute here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref If you're in Dunedin, Sara Barham will be hosting a get together on 22 January.

"50 years of GLAM". Farewell to Major Tom, the constantly changing and wonderfully innovative David Bowie. A reminder to us all in our industry to keep moving forward, to adapt, evolve and innovate. These images were created by Helen Green and published in Huffington Post.

Thanks special members
