A new Brandwatch

There is no better time to examine the social conversations around the 2016 presidential candidates than the day of a debate. Today is such a day.

Later tonight, the GOP hopefuls will take to their respective podiums in Las Vegas for the party’s fifth debate. In the meantime, read on for some social data insights from the past 30 days.

If you are a member of the press who would like a social recap of the debate, or real-time updates during, please contact Kellan Terry at kellan@brandwatch.com.

In the wake of the attacks in Paris on November 13, Foreign Affairs and Immigration have been the main areas of social focus in conversations associated with Republican candidates, with 55 percent and 27 percent (respectively) of all issue-related mentions.
The Democratic party’s conversation proved to be more topic diverse, but not immensely. Their conversation focused on the issues of Foreign Affairs (35%), Health Care (26%) and Taxes (15%).
Party Popularity
The Republican party, and its candidates, are continuing to accumulate more mentions than their Democrat counterparts - the sheer volume of hopefuls is of course a contributing factor. In the remaining days in November (after our first newsletter), Republicans boasted 72 percent of all mentions. That number has seen growth in December as Republicans now hold 80 percent of all mentions in December at the halfway point.

Party Sentiment
Popularity is nice, unless you are popular for the wrong reasons. The below chart clearly shows that Democrats have a more positive sentiment around their mentions as 56 percent of all sentiment-categorized mentions are positive.

The above percentage is considerably higher than the percentage of positive mentions about the Republican party candidates. Currently, only 47 percent of all Republican, sentiment-categorized mentions are positive.

Individual Mentions
There is one candidate across both parties that is running away from the pack, in terms of online mentions. You’ve probably guessed who: Donald Trump.

His mentions easily eclipse the next closest three candidates (Bernie Sanders - 2; Hillary Clinton - 3; Ted Cruz - 4) combined.

Individual Sentiment
As previously stated, social media discussion may indicate top-of-mindedness, but it is important to consider how and what those volumes of mentions are saying. The below chart displays each candidate’s conversation sentiment.

Perhaps dropping out of the presidential race is better for your approval ratings in some cases, as former presidential candidate, Lincoln Chafee, has the most positive sentiment among current and past candidates at 75 percent of sentiment-categorized mentions being positive.

We hope you enjoyed this newsletter and enjoy tonight’s debate. Keep a lookout for our debate recap tomorrow, and we’ll see you in a month.
