Take MCBC's Global Readiness Survey to help shape future initiatives
Our apologies for inadvertently listing an incorrect link to our Global Readiness Survey in last week's edition.
Please take a few moments to participate in the survey, which the Monterey County Business Council is conducting in collaboration with Custom Language Services at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (BCM).
Through the survey, the Monterey County Business Council seeks to glean knowledge about the global readiness of businesses in our county.
The findings from our Global Readiness Survey will help identify the needs of local businesses in regards to global readiness in order to develop strategies that will align with furthering their personal and professional goals and improve the business climate in the Monterey area.
All results will be kept confidential, providing an aggregated overview of the county's global readiness and will be used to inform future MCBC global initiatives.
Here is the correct link to our Global Readiness Survey -- feel free to pass it along to other Monterey County businesses that may want to participate.
The deadline to take part is at the close of business on Monday, Dec. 21.

Don't miss Early Bird registration for Startup Weekend Monterey
The hardest part of starting up is starting out. At Startup Weekend Monterey, you'll be immersed in the ideal environment for startup magic to happen.
​Startup Weekend Monterey, an entrepreneurial training ground, comes to CSU Monterey Bay (BCM) on Jan. 29-31, courtesy of the university’s Institute for Innovation and Economic Development (BCM).
The 54-hour marathon offers a chance to learn the basics of developing startup businesses and launching successful ventures. Startup Weekend begins with pitching ideas on Friday night, continues through brainstorming, business plan development, and basic prototype creation, then culminates on Sunday with demonstrations and presentations. ​Participants work in teams to ​create ​brand new​ startups during the event and are able to meet and collaborate with talented people.
Surrounded by smart, passionate people and with the best tools and approaches at your disposal, you’ll take giant leaps toward creating a business, becoming a founder, and connecting with the right people and resources.
Early Bird registration fee, available prior to Jan. 4, is $75, or $39 for students​. After that date, fee is $99, or $49 for students​. The fee covers seven meals from Friday night through Sunday, and parking for the weekend. Get information and tickets at startupweekendmb.co.

'Wagner & Winick On the Law' signs national syndication agreement
"Wagner & Winick On the Law," a law-focused talk radio program broadcast from KSCO AM 1080 in Santa Cruz and KVEC AM 920 in San Luis Obispo has signed a national syndication agreement with BizTalk Radio Network. Starting Jan. 2, the program will broadcast live nationally on the BizTalk Radio Network Saturday from 4 to 5 p.m. It will also continue to be broadcast live at the same time across the Central Coast on KSCO AM 1080 and KVEC AM 920.
 The program has received great response during its first year and a half. Co-hosts, Mitchel Winick and Stephen Wagner select a law-related topic each week and invite an expert guest on-air to help discuss the issues. Program topics range across a broad spectrum and have recently included discussions of law and policy surrounding terrorism, the second amendment, police body cams, drones, election law, marijuana law, and data security. However, other less-serious topics have also been covered, such as wine law, legal movie reviews, and the NFL controversy over “DeflateGate.â€
“Our program is not intended to provide legal advice,†said Stephen Wagner, a law professor at San Luis Obispo College of Law and trial attorney with Adamski Moroski Madden Cumberland and Green LLP in San Luis Obispo. “Our objective is to select interesting law and public policy topics and then have a meaningful conversation about them. Sometimes our goal is to challenge conventional opinions and other times we merely want to educate our listeners so that they are better informed,†said Wagner.
Wagner’s co-host, Mitchel Winick, is president and dean of Monterey College of Law (BCM) and San Luis Obispo College of Law.

DLI enlists first-ever canine mascot
 There's now an official mascot, the first-ever, for the Defense Language Institute.
Private First Class Lingo, an 8-month-old shepherd mix, enlisted in a formal doggy ceremony on Tuesday. The Presidio of Monterey had a canine mascot back in the '40s, before DLI existed, and his name was Sgt. Tippy.
"He will be uniformed, he will be tracked, he will be documented," said DLI's commandant, Col. Philip Deppert.
Part of Private Lingo's training is learning how to run in formation because in February he is scheduled to lead the commandant's run with all the 2,000 plus service members at DLI.
Aside from his normal duties, the rescue dog was brought to the Presidio of Monterey for a special mission, to be the mascot, and so far he is knocking it out of the park.
Lingo was adopted from the SPCA for Monterey County in November.
