In this edition of the newsletter, we report on a number of ESAI activities. We were pleased to receive a good number of high quality applications for the 2015 ESAI Postgraduate Researcher of the Year award, now in its second year and congratulate the winner Luke Prendergast of UCD. Well done also to the first awardees in our new initiative, the ESAI Grassroots Workshop Support Scheme kindly funded by the EPA (more below), and thanks to ESAI Council members for assessing the applications for the awards above.

Our offer of free membership of ESAI is now open to undergraduates on courses listed on our ESAI courses page. See below for information on how to avail of this offer. We are grateful to our ESAI Liaisons for promoting this message in each college.

ESAI partnered with CIWEM on a half-day conference “Innovation in Water & Wastewater Technology” in Cork on November 27 and we always welcome opportunities to co-host relevant events with other organisations.

Preparations are well underway for Environ 2016 (March 22-24) at University of Limerick. The event is being co-ordinated by Dr Ronan Courtney and Dr Ken Byrne with their local committee along with the support of ESAI Council. Further details can be found in this newsletter. We look forward to seeing you there next March.

Emer Cosgrove, Elizabeth O’Reilly and Cara Augustenbourg, Council members of ESAI recently met former U.S. Vice President Al Gore as part of his global movement to increase climate change awareness and action.

Nine Irish environmental communicators recently met former U.S. Vice President Al Gore as part of his global movement to increase climate change awareness and action. The Irish delegation joined more than 1,200 other Climate Leaders from 85 countries in Miami, Florida to receive training on how to communicate the climate crisis and solutions to the public. Mr. Gore agreed to a brief private meeting with the Irish delegation where they discussed the challenges of climate communication in Ireland.

To date, Al Gore has trained more than 9,000 people to become Climate Leaders and over 19,000 climate presentations have been delivered as a result. In return for receiving the Climate Reality training, Climate Leaders agree to give at least ten climate talks in their local communities based on Al Gore’s own climate presentation, which featured in his Oscar-winning documentary, ‘An Inconvenient Truth’.

The new Climate Leaders are now available to give presentations based on Al Gore’s own climate presentation. Irish Climate Leaders can be contacted through their new website,www.ClimateTalkIreland.com.

The Irish delegation was sponsored in part by the Ireland’s Environmental Protection Agency and through their own personal fundraising efforts
