Baby, it's cold outside...
For many people, December is the season for hot cocoa, warm blankets, and time spent with family. We hum along to Christmas songs we've heard since we were babes as we assemble our own little fellowships and fight the holiday crowds in search of the perfect gifts for loved ones.
Or maybe not? For some of us, holidays aren't as picture perfect as they seem on Instagram, Facebook, and TV. Christmas can be a source of ache if we look upon our own lives and find them less than satisfying. The emptiness can stem from a thousand different things: a broken family; the absence of loved ones; fights where there should be smiles; windows that show parking lots, hotel views, or battlefields instead of the comforting sight of home.
We're all in different places, feeling different things. As the snow or "snow birds" settle in around us, take a moment to look at this season as a chapter in your life. Whether you're setting the scene or fighting at the climax, you're in the midst of writing your own story right now. What do you want that story to say? What do you want it to mean?
Imagine what's ahead. The pen that writes your story has a name. It's called Choice. We may not have chosen the beginning of our story, or the setting, or the conflict. But we do decide how we respond. Blank pages sit ahead of this chapter, ready to be filled with new scenes, new characters, and new adventures. You have the power to turn a tragedy into a comedy; angst into romance; a novel into a classic.
Whatever your story is, all that I ask is that you make it a good one.
