Notes from the Podium
by Tristan Arnold
It's exciting that we get to start working on our concerto competition music. One thing that was very clear last year is that the February concert will sneak up on you. Everything feels like it's coasting into Winter Break. Then we come back and have Four rehearsals until we're on the stage of the Lincoln Theater! Hopefully between your high personal standard and the string seating audition, you'll be extra motivated to dig in over the break.
Take a listen to the pieces on Youtube:
Haydn's G Major Violin Concerto
Fauré's Elegie
Beriot's Violin Concerto No. 9
Summer Dances
Your main goal for this week should be to check out your rhythmic understanding of Summer Dances. There are many different rhythms going on, so if you aren't completely solid on your own rhythms, you will get pulled over to another part, or worse yet, derail the rhythmic relationships written into the piece. Work through it slowly with a metronome, keeping track of the eighth notes
The Haydn also poses some rhythmic challenges, due to tied notes and dotted rhythms written in a slow common time. Take some time to visit that this week so we can get a convincing read of it on Tuesday.
If you were absent last Tuesday, it is your responsibility to get the music you need from Sandra before you need it. Get to rehearsal a little early and ask Sandra for exactly the part you need. Don't wait until we're in rehearsal. Here is what you should have:
Haydn: Strings, Woodwinds
Beriot: Everyone
Faure: Everyone except Percussion
Balmages: Everyone
Have a great week and I'll see you Tuesday!
