Dear Friend of the Farm

You have several thoughtful people on your gift list this year.  So what are you going to get them? A nice scarf? (Yawn.)  A T-Shirt? (Come on now...)

We've got you covered.

Celebrate the summer harvest and hand-crafted creativity at our Harvest Gift Market at Granger Bay over the next two Saturdays, the 12th and 19th December from 9am to 2pm.
Here you will find food and gifts for the festive season, that are 100% local, eco-friendly, natural and beautiful.

The gift items have been selected and curated by Kamers.  Says Wanda du Toit, Creative Director and Product Selector for Kamers. "It’s the most wonderful time of the year … to shop. We’ve got some seriously enviable, value for money stocking-fillers for you stylists".

Market Day Saturday 12 December 2015 from 9am to 2pm, Granger Bay at the V&A Waterfront

Come to Market Day and celebrate some of your local food heroes who make it possible to have delicious, fresh-from-the-farm, locally grown food.

Entrance: There is no fee to enter the market. Pedestrian entrances are open directly from The Lookout and on Beach Road, and cyclists, joggers, dog walkers and others are most welcome.

Public transport: The MyCiTi 104 route stops opposite the market on Beach Road and at the main V&A Waterfront stop. The T01 also stops there, as well as on Granger Bay Blvd a block from the market.

Parking: Parking  is a pleasure - either on site at The Lookout (R10 for the entire day), in one of the many V&AW parking garages, at The Grand Cafe and Beach with a short walk up the wooden steps to the market, or you can park for free along Beach Road, opposite the Somerset Hospital and Fort Wynyard – the gate on Beach Road into the Market site will be open on Saturdays. Map and further details on the website.
What have we got for you this Saturday? A harvest of fruit and vegetables grown by more than 12 local farmers.

Some of the vegetables that we sell at Market Day on Saturdays are grown at our farm in Upper Orange St, Oranjezicht.  Farmers Mark, Thomas, Tendai and Josephine have sent along the cutest baby striped butternut, as well as gem squash, baby leeks, spinach, cabbage, fresh herbs and curly lettuce.

We have long-stemmed mint from Aluna Aquaponics in Stellenbosch.

Farmers Francois and Henriette Malan from White Mountain Natural Produce in Wolseley have harvested baby marrows, green beans, strawberries, Acorn Squash, red green onions and rocket.

Thanks to Farmer Skye Feldmann of Naturally Organics, we'll have heirloom tomatoes, asparagus, fennel, beets, spring onions, cos lettuce and stinging nettle.

From from the dedicated farmers who belong to the Green Road Project in Stellenbosch, we've got organically grown apricots.

Farmer Eric Swarts in Stellenbosch has sent the crispiest of carrots and baby leeks.

This week, we'll again have an abundance of Alan Garlick's Klondyke cherries in 2kg boxes for R175. Two varieties: Sweet Reds and Heidelfinger.

Bringing your own canvas bags is not only the chic, green thing to do, but it will also help ingratiate you with the traders, who are operating on slim profit margins. If you can get to the market early, you are guaranteeing yourself the best selection, and there are sometimes bargains to be found at the end of the day.

We're happy to offer you a simple, easy, convenient and free payment solution as an alternative to cash payments. SnapScan is a smartphone app that lets you use your phone to make secure payments.  It’s free to use and free to download so it’s perfect if you don’t want to carry cash. Read more here.

We're also able to offer credit card payments, thanks to Sureswipe.
What do our Traders have to offer?

For something different over the holidays, try Peter and Lizanne Owen of By Nature's version of the Italian panforte or spicy nut and dried fruit salami. Both are wheat-free, gluten-free, dairy-free and have no sugar added.  Best enjoyed with a desert wine or coffee.

Louise Steenkamp of Wild at Heart Cordials, tells us that her Elderflower Cordial is ready and is available exclusively from our Market Day this coming Saturday.  Infused into a botanical cordial, Elderflower becomes a delicately aquamarine tincture destined to dance with champagne in elegant saucers, or mingle between the bubbles of San Pellegrino at smart garden parties. Sometimes, it even finds itself cast as jelly, wobbling wantonly with fresh fruits of the forest, or coupled with a cool and tart raspberry sorbet. Simply enchanting, elderflower cordial is a wondrous thing.

Martin Raubenheimer of Cure Deli and Salvin Hirschfield of Son of a Butcher have a god mix of meaty treats and special cuts for the festive season:  Lamb, pork, beef and chicken. deboned gammons and large Christmas chickens, weighing from 2 -2.3 kg and free range duck (deboned and stuffed with turducken sausage).

In addition, there's local, artisanal cheeses from Around Cheese and The Culture Club, crusty loaves from Woodstock Bakery, honey from the Honey Connoisseur, West Coast oysters from The Oyster Lady, smoked fish and snoek pate from Stef of Delifish, a selection of sublime olives from Chrisna’s and so much more to eat on site or buy to take home.

Don't miss Spades and Spoons irresistible vegetarian buffet, much of which is completely raw and vegan and Salad Lover's spinach, pea and feta fritters served with a dollop of Turkish Tzsiki, or crispy, crunchy falafel.

If you haven't yet tasted a  Sababa shakshuka (a spicy, Middle Eastern take on eggs and tomatoes), now is the time.

Tracey of Village Herbs has gift wrapped herbs in pots and edibles in window boxes, ideal gifts.

Meet The Author of Mila's Meals

Catherine Barnhoorn has published a recipe and nutrition book called  Mila's Meals, a collection of nourishing whole-food recipes and food ideas for baby’s first year (and the rest of the family too).

Free from gluten, refined sugar, dairy and artificial additives, Catherine, through her own healing journey and nutrition studies at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition®, is aligned with the belief that all disease begins in the gut. For this reason, she believes that wholesome, full mind-body nutrition, with an awareness of food intolerances, is imperative for the optimal growth, development and future-health of your little one.   Since a newborn’s gut is still very permeable (to allow the pre-digested breast milk nutrients through with ease) and with 70% of the immune system located in the gut, it is so very important to take care by eating easy-to-digest, age appropriate foods. A strong digestion will allow for greater absorption of nutrients and a stronger immune system.

Come along and meet Catherine who will be at Market Day this Saturday, signing books, available at 35% off the retail price.
And finally

OMG. Watermelon Radishes.

If Cinderella Were a Vegetable, She'd Be a Watermelon Radish.

Like Cinderella before her transformation, the exterior of a watermelon radish is modest at best and drab at worst. But open it, and all is magic: the interior of this root vegetable practically sparkles with hot pink striations, turning heads as it suddenly appears as the belle of the ball.  Watermelon radishes are an heirloom variety of daikon radishes and originated in China, where they are called shinrimei.  Thanks to OZCF Farmers, Jo, Mark, Thomas and Tendai for cultivating these beauties.
See you at the Harvest Gift Market at Granger Bay, V&A Waterfront or at the Farm in Upper Orange St, Oranjezicht.

Eat your greens,
