Hi Everyone,
I’m Jules and I’m absolutely stoked to be joining Shane and Brad in delving deeper into the topic of startup communities! I have a tremendous amount of respect for both of these genltemen as they have been diligently studying one of the most critical ingredients for sustainable empowerment and progress for upstarts of all shapes and sizes.
I’m looking forward to helping connect the dots to increase our understanding of what fosters (and hinders) the growth of entrepreneurial havens. Along the way we'll be accumulating wisdom as well as lessons learned the hard way in hopes of nurturing the support systems we all call home. From here on out we'll be getting back to the weekly schedule of highlighting 5 of our favorite pieces of content about startup communities around the world and the great people that lead them.
Cheers!
Jules

Check out Ritika Puri’s article on startups.co, where she writes about how contextual commerce will create more payment opportunities in the future. And you might also want to listen to Braintree’s own Harper Reed discuss the future of commerce in his talk, Code.Ship.Repeat, which was given as part of our Braintree_Talks series. You’ll hang on to every last word.

We tend to narrowly restrict our view of entrepreneurial communities to the micro level, but with a broader perspective great insights can be gleaned as to what it takes to foster the growth of a robust regional network. Here’s a great macro overlook of how a number of elements in the Nordic communities have converged to make this region one of the most robust startup ecosystems in the world.

Another notable variable in the equation of the thriving Nordics was the decline of a former tech titan. Perhaps the occasional downfall of a dinosaur is like a controlled burn in a tech community and beneficial for the startup ecosystem’s long term health and prosperity.

The European continent as a whole is seeing startup communities continuing to grow and flourish. This awesome slideshare credits a number of factors including startup "Mafias" as driving forces, but identifies an opportunity for more interconnectivity between these silos of success and the rest.

Startup ecosystems are inherently complex webs of interconnected variables, but here Nicolas Colin boils down the critical elements required for entrepreneurship to flourish: Capital, Know-How, & Rebellion. It's also worth noting that in order to keep entropy from breaking the equilibrium, it's up to entrepreneurs to maintain it.

In this presentation, Greg Tehven from Fargo shares his four strategies to foster a great community: educate your city, infuse the arts, build on your bright spots, and practice radical inclusivity. Greg suggests that when you get together with your community's leaders be sure to take a few minutes to openly and honestly discuss what's working well and what needs improvement from everyone's perspective.
