PRESIDENT'S REPORT
It has been a busy time for ASLIA Victoria during January. The TISLR workshop was a great day for interpreters to refresh or gain further knowledge about the linguistic elements of Auslan. It was terrific to see interpreters attend.

The committee partnered with the Victorian Deaf Education Institute (VDEI) to provide a workshop for Educational Interpreters on January 21st. The valuable assistance of VDEI enabled 29 interstate participants, with a further 29 people attending in person for the opportunity to gain further knowledge from video presentations by Maree Madden and Debra Russell. Jen Blyth and I also presented in person, providing strategies for interpreting challenging subject terminology. We have received positive feedback from attendees and we're thrilled that our colleagues from WA and TAS were also able to participate.

"just wanted to congratulate you and ASLIA on a fantastic PD yesterday. I know myself and the Sunshine crew found it very helpful and can't wait to put all our new tips and knowledge into practice.
Many thanks again on a wonderful job"

Video presentations from the workshop will be available to interpreters as captioned webinars for purchase on the new ASLIA website aslia.com.au in the coming weeks.

The new ASLIA website now has the capacity to accept registrations and payments online for PD events and has a "store" so interpreters can purchase resources such as webinars and publications all in one place! Many thanks to the work of Neil Ray at ASLIA for the countless hours he has dedicated to the association.

Several special interest groups have met and made plans for the coming year. This includes Mental Health, Parents of Deaf Children's Forum, the 30 year anniversary planning committee, Deaf Interpreting, Deafblind Interpreting and Interpreter Trainers. Thank you to all involved for your passion and commitment.

I attended the "Westies" interpreter gathering on Saturday 16th January. The "Westies" are an informal group of interpreters who meet monthly in Altona. It was terrific to see so many people attend for a breakfast chat. I was able to update the group on the work and plans for ASLIA Vic in 2016 and beyond.

We were pleased to receive news of a successful grant application, with the Deafness Foundation awarding ASLIA Vic $4,200 to cover some of the costs for PD events and webinars planned for this year.

We are looking forward to our next event - the Sign Karaoke night on Friday February 5th - a social event for interpreters and the Deaf community, proudly partnering with Auslan Stage Left to raise funds which will enable ASLIA Victoria to conduct more valuable PD events for interpreters. Spread the word!

The plans for 2016 are numerous and we will keep members updated via email, the new website, and on our Facebook page. Please ensure you have registered on the new website and your details are up to date.

Feel free to contact the committee at info@asliavic.com.au with any feedback, suggestions or to offer your assistance - we would love to have your involvement in developing the interpreting industry in Victoria.

I look forward to your engagement with ASLIA Victoria in 2016. Our next committee meeting is on Thursday 4th February at 6pm -Vicdeaf, level 3, 340 Albert St East Melbourne. All ASLIA members are most welcome to attend.

Interpreters Needed for RMIT Focus Group

RMIT Translating and Interpreting is conducting a research project looking into the connections between personality traits and decision-making in translating and interpreting. They are seeking volunteers to participate in a focus group, which entails attending our city campus in Melbourne CBD for 1.5 hrs (for those who reside in regional Victoria or other states, alternative arrangements can be made). Participating in this activity is eligible for PD points for revalidation.

The focus group activity involves a brief orientation and an online questionnaire that you will be asked to fill in onsite. The questionnaire is anonymous and there is no tracking mechanism to identify who completed it. All data collected will be kept strictly confidential.

If you are interested in taking part or have questions, please email project officer Ms Ya-Ping Kuo at ya-ping.kuo@rmit.edu.au

Thank you in advance for your time and support for applied research in translating and interpreting.

Yours sincerely,

Chief investigator: Sedat Mulayim (Translating and Interpreting)
Co-investigator: Merv Jackson (Psychology)
Co-investigator: Miranda Lai (Translating and Interpreting)

As sign language interpreters, we stand at a crossroads. Do we maintain the status quo or act as change agents by investing & engaging, collectively, in the transformation of our profession?

Deaf Interpreters in Denmark and Finland: An Illuminating Contrast

Denmark and Finland exemplify contrasting approaches to DIs and HIs. While roadblocks and resistance often hinder DIs in Denmark, having HIs and DIs study together in Finland leads to mutual cooperation.

Towards Recovery: Hope, Innovation, Co-Design

Organised by VICSERV, the peak body representing community managed mental health services in Victoria, the Towards Recovery conference is shaping up to be one of Australia’s most significant mental health events in 2016.

The Conference Committee is calling for submissions for concurrent sessions that showcase research or evidence based best practices that support positive outcomes for people with a mental illness or support their carers, both in supporting them and looking after themselves.

We are looking for submissions that focus on better outcomes for consumerscarersstaff and/or organisations under the conference key concepts:
  • Hope and recovery
  • Innovation
  • Co-design
  • Peer-led
  • Transformation
  • Empowerment/rights
We want to hear from mental health practitioners in community or clinical settings, consumerscarers and peer workers.

More information, including abstract submission and registrations details, are available on the conference website. You can also contact the Conference Team at conference@vicserv.org.au or by calling (03) 9519 7000.
