As we celebrate this holiday season, we extend a warm thank you to all the generous donors who have supported us throughout the year. We could not protect critical habitat for the planet's threatened turtles and tortoises without you—thank you! These last few months we have been working diligently on the expansion of our Geometric Tortoise Preserve in South Africa (see details below). Your donations toward this land acquisition, no matter how small, are important to us. All donors who give $1,000 or more toward this program will be recognized on new signage on the preserve.

BREAKING NEWS: Critical Funds Needed for Important Land Acquisition


The Turtle Conservancy is thrilled to announce that we have just reached an agreement to purchase an additional 600-acre parcel of land in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. This parcel will expand our current Geometric Tortoise Preserve from 212 acres to more than 812 acres! The newly expanded preserve will protect not only the last significant population of the Critically Endangered Geometric Tortoise remaining in the wild, but also the rich biodiversity of flora and fauna of this habitat. The Rainforest Trust has generously offered to match up to $315,000 of donations toward this land purchase before December 31, 2015. Your donations will help make our preserve the keystone of a recovery program for one of the most endangered animals on the planet.

In Memory of Douglas Tompkins 


It is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating news that one of our conservation heroes, Douglas Tompkins, the world-renowned conservationist and co-founder of The North Face and Esprit, died last week after a tragic kayaking accident on General Carrera Lake in his beloved Patagonia, Chile. He was 72. With Tompkins on the kayaking expedition were five other people, including Rick Ridgeway, a board member of the Turtle Conservancy and staunch supporter of global turtle conservation efforts, and Yvon Chouinard, founder of the clothing company Patagonia.
