Tech-Girl Monthly: January 2016

A Year in Review

2015 was an outstanding year for women & girls in tech in Charlottesville! This year Tech-Girls became a part of Charlottesville Women in Tech, a newly established 501c3 non-profit with a mission to bridge the gender gap in tech by providing a safe and welcoming environment for women and girls to connect, learn and collaborate in Charlottesville. Through collaborations & partnerships, at least 350 girls got in-depth, hands-on technology learning opportunities:
  • 250 girls participated in 6 Girls’ Geek Day sessions held in elementary schools all around Albemarle county.
  • 75 middle school girls participated in before & after school Tech-Girls affiliated programs with UVA GEMS, GREAT & Computers4Kids.
  • 25 high school girls provided mentoring at Girls’ Geek Days and/or participated in Bio-Med Tech-Girls.

Activities & Events

Live & Local

  • January 9 - Girls' Geek Day. Crozet Elementary School (9am to noon). This event is open to all ages, but if you are a 3rd grader or younger, please plan on bringing one of your parents too. Registration required.
  • January 13 - Make It @ the Library at 4:00pm. Kickstart your creativity in this Pop-up MakerSpace that meets on the second Wednesday of the month. Ages 10-15. Registration recommended. Call 434.979.7151 x4 to sign up.
  • January 21 - Tech-Girls segment on Charlottesville Inside Out airs at 8:30pm on PBS-WHTJ.
  • January 31 - SPARK Hackathon presentation expo is open to the public at 7pm on Sunday. Come check out the solutions that area high school students come up with and hear what they learned from their hackathon experience. Keep up to date with what's going on at the hackathon at spark.stab.org.
  • February 13 - Presidents K-12 Chess Open at Ash Lawn-Highland. The event is in two Sections (Rated & Unrated) with 4 competitive age groupings (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12) per section. Registration required.
  • March 4 & 5 - CAPWIC 2016, our own regional Celebration of Women in Computing is happening at Christopher Newport University. This is a great event for high school students to learn about the opportunities & get connected with women in computing. More info.
  • March 19 - Expanding Your Horizons is a one-day math and science conference for girls in grades 6-10. The girls participate in exciting, hands-on workshops organized by JMU faculty & students. There is no registration fee, but all students and accompanying adults and teachers must pre-register. Registration opens soon.
  • Ongoing - Charlottesville Women in Tech Meetup. If you are a mom of a Tech-Girl & want to connect with other female techies, please consider joining us at a monthly meetup. More info.
  • Ongoing - Girl Develop It Central VA. What better way to inspire your daughter, grand-daughter or niece to learn to code than to learn yourself. Girl Develop It Central VA offers beginner classes in Charlottesville and Harrisonburg for adults.
  • Ongoing - Playing Aces Chess is a group of teachers, parents, and interested community leaders who recognize the importance of developing critical and creative thinking skills in every student using chess. They hold chess events throughout the region. More info.
  • Ongoing - Tinkersmiths Makerspace hosts a wide range of workshops that are open to a variety of ages and experience levels. Check out their latest meetups.

Virtual & Global

  • January 15 (deadline) - Congressional App Challenge. high school students in participating Congressional districts will create and submit their own original “apps” that will be judged by panels of local judges. More info.
  • February 16 (deadline) - EngineerGirl Essay Contest. The theme this year is responsible engineering. Contest is open to elementary, middle & high school students.
  • April 15 (deadline) - ProjectCSGirls is a computer science competition for middle school girls. Create something with tech that can help solve an imminent social problem. More info.
  • April 21 (deadline) - Technovation Challenge. Become a technology entrepreneur and develop a mobile app prototype that solves a real world problem in your local community. Work in teams of up to 5 girls to research, design & build a mobile app. More info.
  • Ongoing - Made with Code for classes & workshops geared toward girls.
