KARTEMQUIN FILMS

JANUARY 2016

Welcome to the 50th anniversary of Kartemquin!

In 2016, several organizations in Chicago and around the country will host a series of screenings and events to celebrate Kartemquin’s work, and the power of documentary to inspire action.

Highlights include:

  • A Milestones gala event on June 24, 2016 at the Harris Theater, preceded by a dinner reception at the Chicago Cultural Center. This evening will reunite and celebrate many of our filmmakers, subjects, and partners from across five decades. The Honorary Chair is Chaz Ebert.   • A 50 years of Kartemquin art exhibit featuring historical photographs, artwork, and video and film mechanics. The exhibit will be open May 20, 2016 through August 20th.
  • Free online streaming of every Kartemquin film in chronological order week by week at http://watch.kartemquin.com, starting with the very first film, Home for Life (1966), on January 1, 2016.
  • Throughout 2016, monthly WTTW PBS broadcasts of our films.
  • Multiple retrospectives and premiere screenings across the nation, including at the UCLA Film & TV Archive in Los Angeles in fall 2016.
  • A series of Chicago screenings and events.
  • Various workshops, panels, and master classes hosted by our filmmakers and associates.

The IDA honors Kartemquin founder and Artistic Director Gordon Quinn with their 2015 Career Achievement Award.
Kartemquin Executive Director Betsy Steinberg is named Chicago Tribune's 2015 Chicagoan of the Year in Film.
Hard Earned wins 2016 duPont-Columbia Award

We are delighted that our Al-Jazeera America series Hard Earned will receive one of the highest honors in broadcast journalism on January 17 in New York City. Learn more about the award, and watch the series now on Al Jazeera America on demand.
AT FESTIVALS & IN THEATERS
After it was released in theaters in NYC, LA and Chicago last month, Almost There ended the year on several film critics' "best of 2015" lists.

Ahead in 2016, the film will screen on January 21st at Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, and be on the Southern Circuit Tour, screening in Greensboro, New Orleans, Tallahasse, and Cutler Bay in February. See all upcoming events.

Saving Mes Aynak is celebrating a successful year of reaching audiences and winning awards all over the world, while raising global awareness about the contentious fate of the Mes Aynak historic site.

Icarus Films, one of the world's leading distributors of documentary films, will oversee the North American educational, home, and digital release of Saving Mes Aynak in 2016.

We are also honored to announce that The Reva & David Logan Foundation has awarded Saving Mes Aynak with a $50,000 grant to support our outreach and impact goals. Read more about our plans for 2016.

There are a number of great opportunities worldwide to see Saving Mes Aynak in the coming months, including a special January 28 screening at La Musée de Louvre in Paris, France! See all upcoming events.
Working closely with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and PBS/ITVS, The Homestretch was the centerpiece of an important nation-wide screening and discussion event designed to bring deeper focus and attention to the crisis of youth homelessness. The film continues to bring awareness and resources to communities nationwide. Learn more about the latest events from film's award-winning social impact campaign.

WTTW Chicago PBS will air The Homestretch on January 21, 2016 as the first in a series of special broadcasts in celebration of Kartemquin's 50th Anniversary.
 
In the Game screens across the winter and spring at several Chicago public library branches through the One Book One Chicago program.

Upcoming festival screenings for Maria Finitzo's exploration of opportunity, race, class and gender seen through the lens of a Hispanic girls high school soccer team include the New Jersey Film Festival and Minnesota's Tucker Center Women & Girls Sport Film Festival in February.
